Falling Scrap Iron prices

I only made two loads when scrap crossed $250/ton, have managed to catch a few instances over $140 recently but the average stays low anymore. Can remember scrapping for extra cash in '76, three of us made $10,000 clear in a year thought we were pooping in the Tall Cotton back then!!

How much was it in 76 ? If it would go up close to $ 200.00 i would sell alot of prodject stuff but i cant see that happening.When i started it was around $60.00 in Kc i had a 1967 GMC and a 16' tralier. They would pay more if you hauled over 5 tons so i always had over 5 ton. I made 4 trips a week for several years i couldnt spend all the money i was makeing.I dont know why i didnt get a biger truck and trailer and make less trips.

I think we were getting $55/ton average, low as $45, highs would bump $75, what made our year was a 'Copper Tube' low pressure boiler received in what I believe was error from a strip mine scrap contract along with Several DOZEN aluminum bar three phase high HP conveyor squirrel cage motors. Those brought us the big coin. Worked for almost three months weekends and after hours event went without vacation time to scrap out at the mine.

Likely subjected to asbestos from insulation matts, various types of transformer oil(PCBs?), all manner of friction plates and shoes likely asbestos covered, who knows what the hell was inside the motor windings, know we saw Mica but maybe asbestos too. Old transformers for the motors had Sheet windings, copper close to 1/16" thick 2' wide at times some 150-250 lbs per device. We were getting $1.35/lb back in the day!!! for copper and $.95/lb aluminum. Can still see those end of month paydays.

I hauled a load of shred this morning $115.00. Ii was the kind of load that your glade to get rid of.It it wasnt so muddy i would load another.

Went to two places that take steel, one was 115 and the other is 120. Asked if it matters what kind and they said No. Can be a mix of galvanized and regular, makes no difference. Been keeping my stuff separated to get a better price, but appears that wasn't worth it. Louisville may be paying more, but that's just to far away

It went down to $45.00 and now is around $85.00. I am going to haul some this week because i am out of room.I have 4 trailers and 2 trucks loaded. I was hopeing for over a hundred but i am worried that it may go lower.

Just hauled a few loads of scrap last week, the price is down to around 60 a ton, then they started charging for appliances, so I left with a whole lot less than expected, good thing I didn't toss on all the appliances I had or else I'd have to pay to dump the loads of scrap.

Appliances had to be run thru a crushing shredder here to eliminate as much of the porcelain as possible, reduces the weight some so they have been charging here for awhile.

We've been cleaning out sinkholes and came up with decades of discarded appliances, usually we toss them in the brush fire first to pretty well barbecue them along with anything with rubber tires on it, then crush them with an excavator and mix them into the load, this time around we were pressed for time so we burned the vehicles and tossed the appliances on top of the load, won't do that again anytime soon.

Appliances are no problem here they dont care. I have been cleaning up a barn were they tryed to store some green hay. It was so hot there was no wood left.I Just got home after loading the last tractor. Sometimes they dont like heavy stuff so l cut it up some what.It hasnt been a great job because i wasnt able to spend a hole day working there. Almost every thing is loaded i just have to haul it off i wouldnt have done this job but i have done clean up for the owner before and made out good.

I hauled 4 loads and got $90.00 a ton. I am going to load 2 loads this weekend. I think he will pay $110.00 for cars if so i will sell them.

I think we are around 85.00 a ton here for oversize steel. Im doing the crane work on a ship demo right now. Theres about a 1000 tons to cut and load out. A few goodies ive been able to save.

The local place has a sign on the highway and he has gone down $10.00 a ton. I have a load on the truck now its the last of the junk that i piled in the drive after that i may see what the market does. Tugger its hard not to save something back.

Hosspuller the ship will hauled on a marine railway . We were just taking some of the higher chunks off , masts and cargo derricks before haulout.
Old Doug . The scrap isnt mine,but they let me pick a few goodies out as we go. Im holding back all my heavy chunks at my yard,crane frames,steel counterweights ect. I now consider that stuff part of my retirement fund when i reach freedom 85 .
