Wheels on one side not moving - 1970 CASE 1740

Hi all, we have a 1970 Case 1740 skidsteer which up until last year worked fine with only minimal issues. This was purchased a while back by my husband in very used condition but since we use it for lighter stuff it fit our needs perfectly. Last year someone borrowed it and returned it broken. He said there was a screwdriver stuck into where one of the axle keys goes, that the screwdriver broke and so he purchased a replacement key from Tractor Supply. The screwdriver has apparently been there since we've had it so we have no idea what the reasoning was.
The problem...

Currently when it is on, the left wheels work fine but the right wheels don't. The axle spins all way to the wheels but the wheels themselves don't spin. We have a repair manual but it covers multiple models and unfortunately some of the diagrams are difficult to figure out. Right now we are trying to get an idea of where we should be looking. My husband said when he tries to move one of the right side wheels the other right side wheel also moves a bit so they still seem to be connected to each other. I've tried searching around but I can't seem to find this specific problem or at least I don't know enough terminology to properly search. Does anyone have any thoughts on where we should be looking? Thanks for the help!

look on the right side case above the wheels on the flat part of the case and there should be two inspection plates. take them off and that will show you the drive sprockets. you may have a problem in there. there is one chain that connects the two wheels. smaller on is the drive chain. hope this helps.

TY CASE1234! We got it open and the No 40 chain tightener was completely broken off and a bit chewed up as well as the chain breaking and the thrust washers and bearing being broken. Had my hand in the bottom trying to fish out as much of the metal as I could. There are metal shavings all over the place on the bottom (in the fluid) but I'm not sure if that will cause a problem later on or how to get them out. Any suggestions?

Really, thank you for your help!

Should be a drain plug on the bottom of the chain case, just make sure you don't remove the one for the hydraulic tank or the fuel tank!
I would try and get that chain case as clean as possible to avoid future problems.

If you can find the drain and get most of the oil out put plug back in and dump in a few gallons of diesel fuel. I like to have the machine up on blocks with all the wheels off while doing this, then run several minutes in each direction to stir things up drain and repeat. To not waste too much fuel doing this you could let it set in a pail for a day or two and then filter it through a paint strainer and reuse it a couple times.

I found a good used chain on the net. I believe is an 80 chain. like the guy said drain all the oil out the drain hole. use some paper towels to clean it out after your done. make sure each corner is cleaned out. I think it calls for 5 quarts 3owt oil, should be a snap ring to remove to remove your bad sprocket. you can get those parts off the net, ebay. just remember your chain is suppose to have just a little slop in it. don't get it to tight unless you want to destroy your seal and bearing. try to determine why the chain broke. if it was because the bearing went bad then the seal is probably bad. they do just break some times though. since your going into that side. jack your machine up and take the wheels off and inspect the other side. mine has grease zerts behind the wheels. good time todo that if yours does. with the wheels off and the covers off you can operate the machine to see that it operates smoothly. on mine you adjust the chain by loosning the bolts on the front drives and there an adjustment bolt you screw in or out depending what you need. you might search the net for your machine to tell you how much you adjust the chains. just make sure when your satisfied the bolts to hold your drives in place are good and tight with new lock washers. hope this helps. norm
