Like learning washers, ALWAYS Face Up flat side down rails are Small or Narrow Link(Bushing) End Forward, Not so hard to remember.

What will be the end purpose, personal, few hours per operating season, dependency for a paycheck, private business? I have a antique hard to find parts for machine, is simplistic and seem to find MOST components I Need to keep it moving. That stated I depend for nothing of the machine it is a hobby and past time use maybe a few tens to a hundred hours a year.
I will keep it a year or two to clean up 15acres from a tornado that went through. I am finishing clearing the trees and will dig a pond with my excavator. So will need the dozer for final grade and cleanup around trees. I have been looking for a while and not much around for under $20k. Just thought some feedback on this unit if there is anything i should look for if i go see it.

Check for reasonably close proximity parts suppliers, also check on machine parts availability where some of these have gone to obsolescence levels. Komatsu is not known for parts readily available on a number of machines.
No pieces or extreme time factor to get or only well worn used may wish to stop, bite the bullet and arrange for rental of Newer NOT YOURS machines on as needed only basis and not have the investment may not be able to recover machine. $6K on one two or even three occasions where you supply fuel and add oil and grease ONLY could be beneficial.

Ya renting is nice its just hard to get full benefit of the time.
I just talked to the guy and it has a dif leak. Have to add 1/2l per day
New chain and sprockets and every other pad. New water pump. Late 70s machine. There is a dealer close by.
Hi all I have a question on a D20a-6 on cold start up no matter what temp is outside When I start the dozer normally takes 4-5 cranks when cranking it rolls gray/white smoke when it does hit it misses for a little bit then clears up once warm or after a few minutes running starts up fine with no issues. Was curious on thoughts of what’s causing this

Old age, losing a little Compression is likely.

Are you using the glow plugs? Does your glow plug indicator glow? If yes, check your plugs with an ohm meter.

Yep, on the -6 models at least, use the glow plugs every start according to Kommie. It makes a difference even in summer in my experience.

Always heat glow plugs prior to starting. 10 to 12 seconds seems to be the majic time at least on mine.

I had the use of a D31S-16 Loader for a while.Firstly,I had to fix a busted pinion & bullgear. It became a great machine for property work,not too small at 7.5 tons. There are lots of aftermarket parts...check out steeringclutch.com & many others on Google Search.
Like all 40 YO machines,you need to test the basics & look at the oils & filters to see if it's been serviced.
There are lots of other machines that are harder to get spares for,so if it's tidy enough,it might be a good buy.
Buy manuals for it...they pay for themselves every year.eBay or Tradebit might be a source.

I have just taken delivery of a D21A-8 s/n 90038, apparently 2008 manufacture, 948hrs.
It is fitted with detachable root rake and rippers. It has the steering leavers on the dash.
However when checking part lists online, it appears that the -8 only came with the joy stick steering. I can't find the gated gear shift mechanism setup that mine has. The last machines that have the normal gated shift in the online parts lists are the -7s.
So did the D21A-8 only come with joystick steering?

Hi, Found this by accident, sorry if not new to you. I know many bemoan the complexity of modern machines, this is simple older Komatsu tech, is available as a direct drive or as a full hystat, Called a Beml BD 50 https://www.bemlindia.in/writereaddata/Downloads/20170905055550BD50.pdf
It would be interesting to know the relative cost of the hystat vs DD - otherwise it is the same machine.
They make others & other types of machine. I guess it would come down to their metallurgy - as to weather the machine was any good. Did not think it worthy of a thread of its own? but might be last builder of a direct drive dozer. I have seen many aftermarket Komatsu Indian made replacement parts - but seem to start at the D31 up.
Also this site gives tips on operating & explains the best use of the slot dozing technique

I was told when young if the dirt is not peeling then the blade is loosing its load, maybe a little but the compensation of the 2nd gear push of a filled blade may well win out time & fuel wise. Have not touched a dozer in years though.

Still fall back to old school
Cuts should be made deep enough to strip material but not load machine down so far that need to unload before next bite
Long shallower cuts will produce more consistency than gouge loads
