I got a call to do this internet tower at 2:00 pm today, it got rained out on Friday and winded out on Saturday. It’s 110 ft. I’m going back on Tuesday with the man basket to instal the equipment on it. This is the fourth one I’ve done for the same company.

This a beaver trap at a municipal culvert, last Thursday I cleaned out the culvert and set this trap in place. I drove by today to have a look, I think I could hear the beaver laughing at me, the trap was jammed right full of grass and twigs and the flow was all but stopped again.

I unloaded a truck load of re-bar for a new municipal water tank then a day later I was back and moved some of it out of the way so they could finish the floor mat and put the bent rod in the hole for them.

I was back to the internet tower to do some basket work so they could install the transmitters and wiring. The last one I did for them the climber carried it all up by himself, he said never again.

This is a tall wall for one of my regulars, 3,000 lbs. at 44 ft. Nothing to it. The general contractor wanted to use the concrete truck, he is a mid mount k boom so he would have been close to 60 ft. The framer said no and called me.:D

Always interesting working on tower sites with the crew .

Last one I was on they set the lower section with a small boom truck and got it guyed off then used a " winch mule " & jib to finish the tower .

I set column cages this morning and am sitting waiting on the forms to show up that I will off load and place for the concrete crew. Got to love sitting but it gets pretty boring fast, and hard on the cell data.

Yeah I had to get used to not feeling guilty just sitting there! Something that as a carpenter just didn't happen, it was always "all asses and elbows," as we say out here. Now, I relax, (your idea of the footrest in the cab was great, thanks again) or play around with the phone and the Sat radio, maybe make some Starbucks instant coffee with the onboard inverter and electric kettle, or eat some trail mix if lunch time, and let the hours build. Even with the electric bike I carry, I sometimes just stay in the cab when lunch rolls around as it's so comfortable.

They are pretty nice forms, the only complaint I have with them if they've been abused and beat around, the area where the clamps hook on gets misshaped. Then the lifting brackets don't want to latch on correctly. And flying a 10' x 20' panel when a bracket comes off is no fun at all.

I use a short spreader bar on them a lot, just to keep the brackets from sliding together in a two point pick. I've got about a 4' one that works really nice for them.

If they have a short form hooked onto a wide one, sometimes there isn't a good spot to keep the bracket from coming in and a bar makes it nice. The grabs are also just pulling straight up then, not side pulling trying to twist them off. Plus if they are up on 30' walls when you're taking the forms off, they don't have to try to swing the grabs out, they are already hanging spread out, and they can just clamp them on. I think it makes it go a little faster.

It always helps if you're flying them in a 25 mph wind or so. Keeps you on your toes.

It got a bit gusty a couple times today we ended up using a rope, they were spinning like a top. It’s kinda hard to do much with it except take it out of harms way and set it down, yikes

Yikes I got my first inspection from the ministry of labour today ( government safety inspector ) he asked to see my licence and inspection records, and he was kinda grouchy about it too. I knew everything was in order but I was still pretty nervous, I had a load on the hook and he said when you get unhooked from the load come find me. So when I was done with the load I had on I swung over the deck set my rigging down, put my hard had and high visibility vest on grabbed my licence load charts and inspection book, shut the truck off and about then he came alone and asked for my paper work. Easy peazy he said everything looked good and said I had nice clean well maintained equipment. I asked him a few random questions and he gave me his card and away he went.
The luckiest thing that happened was that he didn’t come yesterday, in the last seven years I bet I haven’t left my crane folder at home 3 times. It holds my truck inspection book, crane inspection book and annual engineers inspection report. He wouldn’t have been as cordial if I had not of had them with me.

That reminds me of a job the Old Man & I was on at an airport .

We had just set some I beams on the lowboy and " Safety Chick " comes running up waiving her hands & yelling something at me in the Insley crane .

With the engine running it was hard to make out but sounded like " You need a safety fag " .

Yelled back at Safety Chick …… " Come again ? "

Now she's really belting it out & gettin all wound up . " You forgot your safety fag ! "

Shut the Insley down and said " that's my Old Man helping me but he aint no Fag . "

Seems like we got the wording crossed with all the noise .

Safety flag .:D

" Safety Chick " never would talk to us anymore after that . :(

I’m not sure if he liked girls or not, I wasn’t going to ask!
I found out why he was so grouchy and how he ended up on our sight. He was at a subdivision a 1/4 mile away and there wasn’t a worker on sight that was compliant, he shut down the sight and while he was doing that he saw my boom in the air and came in with both guns loaded, but calmed down pretty fast when he say that we where in good shape.

I’ve been fairly busy with the crane, the water tank project has been really good I’ve got about 73 hours in on it ( that’s by far the most hours I’ve put into one project) the housing business is a month behind this year because of all the rain we’ve had, but I was at 4 house starts setting beams and trusses last week. Nothing really picture worthy though.
I set trusses for a new house for a framing crew, when I drove in my heart sank it looked like a bomb went off. Honestly if I didn’t have a loan at the bank for the crane I would have turned and drove away, my first words to them where “ did you forget I was coming “ they had two big beams sitting in the only place I could set up without being 50 ft. From the house and that would have put my first pick, ( a stack of 2x12 that weighed 2200 pounds) at 85 feet. I got them to move the beams with the tella-handler and I backed in on a torn up piece of ground that was reminiscent of a WW I battle ground and unloaded every piece of dunage I had, got THEM to shovel of four flat spots for my outriggers and went to work. The upsetting part is these guys do this every day, they just don’t give a crap if I wreck my crane or kill someone.
