As many of you know, I don't open injection pumps. It's not my department. So with that said, please help me confirm or deny my suspicion.
I have an ancient galion roller. It has a 4 banger waukesha engine. Attached to that is a rotary 4 stanadyne/ roosamaster pump. We have established fuel supply. Clean source. The engine starts, runs maybe 3 to 4 seconds and dies as if shut off. It has manual throttle control and manual shut off lever. I personally think that the pump is hurt inside, just want to know if there is an easy fix I can perform in chassis.
Help me obi wan kenobie, you're my only help.

I am not the Pumpguy, but I AM from SC, and I just drove by a Holiday Inn, so:

Have you tried taking the return line fitting out of the top of the pump and starting it up?

Quit lookin over my shoulder Mitch..
Yes take ALL the fitting off the top cover.. when done properly, your looking at a hole..
Now start the machine & see if it runs.. it probably will.. so we know the flex ring had broken-up..
Then all u gotta decide is how u want it repaired..?? Put a flex ring back in it or put in an updated part that takes the place of the flex ring & you'll NEVER have that problem again.. {cuz it will happen again}

With the fitting out of the top cover , she starts and runs. There appears to be a booger in the inlet of the fitting. I would think this is similar to an overflow valve?

FWF … I had the same decision with my pump off an old backhoe. It took 30 years for the flex-ring to let go. The up-date cost $180 bucks more (as best I recall) so the replaced flex ring is the next owners problem. :p

Yeah, that's what I tell customers.. IF u plan on keeping the machine till the wheels fall off, put the updated part in it..
IF ur gonna sell it after your project, let the next guy worry about it..
It funny that the last flex ring lasts 30+ years.. & I get'm in where the pump has been done 2-3 years ago & the flex ring has started to deteriorate..

State owned machine, I don't know if they legitimately want it fixed or if they want it quoted out of inventory. We'll find out. It runs beautifully, right now. AND I COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT THE HELP!!!!!!
I will only play with stuff I have experience with, this was outside my comfort zone. Thanks for the solid info.

You "could" knock the ball out & wait for it to run-away..{get it out of inventory} could be 30 minutes, could be 6 months..
That way you'll look like a hero for fixing it & nobody will remember YOU worked on it 6 months from now..Lol

Oh no. None of that. Allegedly it only has 360 hours on it. I've offered up the suggestion to have the pump overhauled. Waiting for reply.
As soon as I saw the stanadyne tag, I kinda just assumed, yeah, it's a pump problem. Lol
I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't, "the problem " .... lots of 6.5, 6.9 & 7.3 junk in my history.

Yeah, RoosaMaster.. {now Stanadyne} REALLY screwed up using that "elastomer" ring inside that pump..
Good for ME.. bad for the owners..
Whats really funny is, back in the 60's, they had come up w/ a "solid" weight retainer that took the place of the governor ring.. but was scrapped, do it IT coming apart & destroying the pump..
I guess this is the lesser of 2 evils.?? it shuts the machine down instead of destroying it..
AND NOW the owners have an option of putting in a new solid piece weight retainer, that doesn't explode the pump.. but most fuel shops wont make the customer aware of it.. because its built-in repeat business down the road when the "new" flex ring fails..
