The inline filter is can be purchased at any auto parts store. It will fit hundreds of different fuel systems that have 5/16 inch fuel lines.

I am always cautious on ebay “universal” listings and autoparts guys who think they know something about a machine that is older than they are. The ebay listing above is one example that does not seem correct to me.

Specifically the listing above states it is a 10 micron 5/16 filter for the Case D139225. As GregsHD pointed out in posts 18 & 19, the Case filter is 3/8 and not a fine micron filter, but instead a course screen.

In the past, I got into a discussion regarding these small metal can filters, and the result was we cut open some. See picture below. For what it is worth, the filters are orientated in the picture for flow left to right.

To be clear, the filters are likely designed for different applications. They all have their place and function, it is just that they may not be substitutes for each other even though they look the same on the outside.

In this case, the application is a “screen” as GregsHD pointed out. Installing a fine micron paper filter could result in premature filter clogging.

Wi4x4man, if you still have the old removed filter around, it would be beneficial to cut it open.

If it was a paper style with small micron filtration, that would explain the clog up and issues you had. If it was the metal screen type, then see what type debris is in it. Ideally it should not clog up, but since it did, there could be more to the story to consider. For example, as you have a ~25+ year old machine, perhaps it has some rust in the fuel tank/chassis, or debris in the fuel that needs to be addressed.

Thanks for posting the commentary & details/examples about these filters....at the dealer's service counter they indicated a filter from the auto supply house would be less expensive (they likely believed the inside filter media were all the same....).
I mostly decide to stick with the OEM on such parts to be on the safe side of the decision tree of [Slackadaisical] "parts is parts".

When it is cold, do folks set up a tarp to act as a wind break and then run something like a torpedo heater on the lee side to try and add some warmth to the work area?

I just saw these posts, and never had notifications.

Unfortunately I tossed the little filter out and it is now long gone. I thought about cutting it open, but got sidetracked with the million other things I need to do. I still think it is goofy to have the filter / screen in there to begin with. In my humble opinion, the transfer pump should be between the primary and secondary filters. That way it is protected from debris from the tank.

In terms of warming things up in the cold, I guess it depends. The day I had to change the filters I was out where I did not have any available heat unless I started a camp fire next to the machine. Otherwise when I am dealing with this stuff not starting due to the cold, it is in my pole building.
