Wow. Thank you for the info!
Part of me says that she would be a lot more user friendly with a 3406 b and some more modern suspension with higher gearing.
I'm a little concerned about rust between the layers of the double frame. Got any suggestions for this?
Also, can a rad guard still be found? To me it doesn't look right without the guard and a big H on the front!
Thanks again!

Yellowstar, That is great. Yes you are right about the engine and rear suspension. Funny enough that you should think that way. It is a very common upgrade today to make these old blister come alive again. As for the rear frame rails, We all have done this. My 1972 HD had this problem. We did the tear down and split the rails. I was lucky enough to find a set of housings that were in mint condition so Vic Rowlinson and I cut all the rear bolts and drove them out Then lifted the frame rails out of the chairs .Undid the cross members and all that was left sticking out was the two rails from the back of the cab to the tail frame. We then split the frame rails and removed all the rust and such. Had new frame inserts bent up and main cross members . We then installed them and started drilling. Pulled all the rear ends apart and installed them in the newer diff housings and all new seals ,Brakes and all else we figured that could be a problem. Vic repainted the back end and we were back in business. I should have gone with the upgrade Nuway or Pete -airtrac air ride suspension, This would have been the way to go. But being a purist I kept the rubber block suspension, Kind of like driving a 2X4 with steel wheels You kill two birds with one stone so to speak, Because you will never touch the back end again . Then you get into the engine department. How much power would you need/want. For the most part , The 3406B is more than enough for whatever you would want. By going this route ,you would not need to install the air to air assy, and that is a pain in the a##. You can still keep your shutters and for all intents and purpose nobody can tell that you have changed anything because it still looks like a NEEDLE NOSE HD Hayes and it rides like a mattress. There are steering changes you can do to replace the old Vickers system as well if you so decide. I went with the original 8V71 N and installed dual 9 inch Donaldson mufflers and stacks. This was a little problematic as for visibility because it does tend to give you a blind spot on the drivers side, Just something to think about if you lay out your plan to go this route. There are brushguards around, and not really hard to come up with. I saw in the pictures that the battery box cover was laying on the ground, Be sure to grab that ,if for no other reason that having a template to make a new one if needed. Also ,look around and ask him if he has the muffler guard around in the shop maybe, with the engine side panels. Sometimes these were removed because the new muffler was a 10 inch instead of an original 9 incher and the brackets would not fit anymore. All this is not a biggie because they are around and not hard to make. Trust me here The new wrap around ones with all the holes in them like the Kenworth ones don't work they look like hell and just don't look right. Stay with the original style with a grab handle, they were and are the best.. Well what else are you concerned about??? You can always PM me if it gets intense LOL

They must be still using the two P16's on the far left. Both these trucks were Hayes Forest trucks .units T519 and T521. Both of those trucks have BD121 Rear ends and 18 speed trans in them. They were bought new by Pat Carson in 1986 along with a third truck T517. That truck was kind of for sale last year over on the sunshine coast along with a lowbed trailer. These three trucks were part of the acquisition of the Pat Carson Fleet when Hayes Forest bought out PCB

I think the blue and white Hayes ended up in Narrows Inlet BCFP division where it was painted from orange to the blue and white. The whole fleet got painted one winter after Interfor took over from Fletcher Challenge who took over BCFP

hayes lowbed (2).jpg hayes lowbed (3).jpgThis truck #6-247 got a in house ground up rebuild in Narrows at the time everything got painted . This would been around the mid 90's . Last time I saw it (above pics) was in Powell River 2011. I think they may have rebuild one other one at that time. If those trucks are Horsemans their is a good chance it's a Narrows truck. I think Gary bought one or two when Narrows close down and joined Clowhom falls

Steve, I wonder if in fact then if this is not 6-248, the sister truck . They both had the hydraulic ram under the truck bunk. the one picture'd in the Nanaimo lakes sort yard on blocks still has the Hydraulic tank mounted on the drivers side of the water tank in the ladder. the boxed in top of the water tank on each side of the saddle was done to one of them. not sure which one it was without going back through Al's pictures from up there. The picture you posted above was the one I saw with her for sale somewhere on the sunshine coast some years ago. time will tell if I get over that way and get to see her... The search continues... You might have posted pictures of this one some years ago . Seems there was a picture of the dash layout in her also.

There has been a picture of the 6-249 posted on another site .She has been brought back out and is maybe going to be used again. A few years ago i tried to buy her but it was not to be She was tied up in a paper trail and nobody would commit to anything up there. For those of you that dont know what i am talking about There were two trucks sent from Cowichan Woodlands up to the QC Islands. Sandspit operation. However both trucks were taken to Port Alberni and converted from the "Folding Reach Winch trucks" to the Crown Z style preload. This was done at Port Machine Works in town here. The two trailers just disapeared. I was told they were sold for parts being as they would only fit on those specific style trucks. The reason the trucks were converted was because there was only the trailer style like we (M&B) and Crown Z had up there. Was easier to just make the trucks fit THEIR trailers. The following pictures are of Dave Whiskin driving his 6-249 and the other driver (afraid I have forgotten his name) driving the 6-253 . They stopped at the Franklin dispatch shack and then went on to the Cameron Division Shop outside town and left them there. Was a sad event because these guys had to turn those trucks over to a very uncertain future and they were THEIR TRUCK's.. IMG_0218.jpg IMG_0217.jpg

The next pictures I took at the Cameron Shop while they awaited the trip to town to the machine shop. It would be the last time I saw her. I had an attachment to the 249 right from the time Johnny Sawatzki got her brand new in 1973. He was a good friend. Always a lot of laughs, He was an old BCFP,Vancouver Bay driver so we had history.. When John went into the dispatch position Dave Whiskin got her and it was just as good. I sat in that truck at Cameron that night after I took the pictures and it was the saddest time. Like saying goodbye to an old friend...IMG_0226.jpg IMG_0229.jpg How do you do that?? Hard.
