ok I bought a 580ck it’s been sitting for an undetermined amount of years outside in the brush I’ve looked it over they covered the breather instead of the exhaust but there isn’t any signs of water in the oil I order a shop manual and I’m gonna try to fire it up next weekend I’m just wanting to know what precautions should I take I’m hoping it will start and load under it’s own power or should I maybe plan on taking another machine with me I’m new to the old case machine but not afraid to learn any help is appreciated

I would def. take another machine..
Make sure u have fuel to the injection pump INLET..
Loosen the lines AT THE INJECTORS.. that way it'll bleed any air out between the inj. & pump..
PLUS u can SEE if its pumping fuel..
IF its not pumping.. take off the top cover, {3 screws} & find the metering valve & MAKE SURE it moves back & forth freely.. If its a manual cable shut-off, u can crank the engine without the TC on.. & recheck the squirts at the injector lines..
If it doesn't pump THEN.. nuthin u can do, but load it up..
Good Luck..

Read my thread on my 580b resurrection. You can use a clip on style remote starter switch on the starter to crank it if it's diesel and it will start if it going too....add some Howes diesel additive to the lower fuel filter b4 u try to crank it..will lubricate the pump injectors and the cylinders.. Do take another machine in case.

U have a key in your tool box.. a screwdriver..Lol..
Seriously.. a REMOTE STARTER BUTTON will work & u can get 1 at any parts store or Walmart..
Just hook 1 end to the big post & 1 to the small & push the button..
IF the injection pump has an electric shut off, you'll have to hot wire it off the battery or hot post on the starter. {Battery is closer}
But seeing its a 68' its probably a pull cable shut-off..??

The key for the backhoe is the same as an old craftsman lawn mower, or like thepumpguy said use a small screwdriver, be sure and put the four speed shifter in start position which on these machines is all the way over to the left and up. the shift pattern should tell you.

I was talking with a customer at work the other day about my 580b and he said an uncle of his had freed up a stuck motor using bleach in the cylinders. I used tranny fluid b4 with luck but he said the bleach ate the rust right off.. Dunno Might dunk a rusty piece of metal in some bleach 1st.

Acetone mixed with ATF makes a good rust buster, if water intrusion into cylinders will be better off to pull the head THEN start the de-rusting. Valves seized in guides, chunks of whatever in ports falling back into cylinders, not a good prospect.

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a 1970 case 580ck and have begun going through everything that needs attention. On the top of my list is to install a new temperature sensor to replace the one that has a broken sensor on the end of the wire. It was a mechanical one and I would like to replace it with a mechanical one. The problem is that I cannot locate where it was attached, since I found it hanging free. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
