Deck over tilt or with ramps

Don't want a goose neck

Have to many trailers and need more then my car trailer, looking at 10 to 12K. Trying to figure issues with two different type trailers. Plan to use a 2 5/16 or pintle but like 2 5/16 better due to less wobble/noise. Deck over or between finders. I have a 10 Ton tag but need to use the dump truck to pull it, so looking for more PU type

What issues have been found with these different types?

The deck over trailers are nice if you need to load pallets or other things on it with a set of forks, but it does keep your machine load up high. I run an older Dynaweld between the fenders trailer and it's been excellent since I upgraded the axles years ago, it has fold down ramps that stand up straight when you put them up so they don't take up deck space. I would love to try a tilt trailer but I'm always afraid that I would try to unload in an off-camber situation and bend the back of the trailer.

Keep in mind with a tilt deck that you will have to drive up the tilt, stop the machine, get off, then lower the deck. I guess some may have remote controls, but I'm not sure they all do.

On my rollback truck that leads to me winching just about everything.

We run a mechanical tilt tag along its wonderful for not messing with ramps and running skid steer or dozer right up its less handy if you want to put a couple attachments on the trailer because it will tilt down so you have to work around that

I have a PJ deck over tilt bed. 2 x 7,000 axles. Available in bumper hitch or gooseneck versions. They now have a version with either 8K or 9K axles, I don't recall which.

The two mistakes I made buying mine were no winch plate, and no wireless for the tilt.

I have run deckover trailers with a short dovetail and ramps. These worked well for me. On one of them, the ramps flip over onto the trailer to make a totally flat deck, even over the dovetail. The ramps stand straight up on another one. My friend has one with fenders that has a tilt deck. I like the tilt, but not the fenders. Most of my trailers now, and in the past have been by Big Tex.

Thanks for the comments. I've seen other guys use large tilt trailers, and they have shocks so they just drive back until the tilt starts moving and it slowly goes down, same thing when going up. These were the larger size tilts

Think I'm going to go with ramps again, and fenders, but probably drive over ones. Everything I load goes between the fenders and is nice to load stuff with my forklift without. Plan on getting a 60 to 80hp tractor and guess I'll just use the 10T tag and dump truck to move it if it winds up over capacity

Alldodge I'm kicking around the idea of buying another trailer and bouncing both types back and forth as well.

Tired of ramps but never had a tilt. Currently have a 14K pan trailer with regular fenders, a 14K gooseneck and a 54K tag that sits on the yard because I don't currently have a truck to pull it.

I hire out all the heavy iron moves because it's cheaper for us, we stay on a project for at least 2 weeks or more at a time but we move our smaller iron and accessories around often - CTL's, trench rollers, rock box, etc.

The reason at looking at a tilt is loading a trench roller. We can load them on the ramp trailer but you need a piece of plywood over the ramps and the ramps close to level. I don't think our TR's will walk up a steep tilt trailer but would if the angle was small. A tilt would eliminate needing a piece of plywood or a larger loading machine.


So the small tilt trailers work differently than the larger ones? I thought the small tilts worked the same with basically a hyd. cylinder plumbed to itself and the weight of the machine moving on the trailer made it tilt up and down with a safety lock on the frame for transport.

I guess I need an education on small tilts.:)

I don't know about others, but my PJ has a battery and a 12V pump with a 2 way valve, so the cylinder locks it down.
