CAT 259b3 LOSS OF POWER

i have a 259b3 that runs great. however just started to run rough sputter and blow white smoke then it looses power and shuts down. it will restart run ok then do it again.
we changed the fuel filter and air filter. not sure what to do... any ideas?

IIRC the fuel transfer pump is a weak link in this fuel system, but check for a plugged fuel line somewhere first.

Also try running it with the tank cap off for a few minutes and see if the problem goes away.

Thanks for the info. I have tried running it with the cap off it still runs the same. But I will look for a blockage in the fuel line.

The fuel transfer pump is also a known weak point in that fuel system. Do a search for "fuel pump" in this section and you'll come across plenty of instances of problems.

Thanks again. Would you happen to know where the fuel pump is?
There is a pump on top of the filter but I thought that’s a primer pump.

It does double duty. It's a priming pump and a transfer pump as well. Cat have so much confidence in it that it's doesn't even have any repairable parts inside, it has to be replaced.
