Do you have 3 phase doug? I'm going to guess no, but if you did there are always a lot of used 3 phase compressors around cheap, that have a ton of life left in them. Even if you found one that was 3ph and you just have single, you could find a 1ph motor and switch and work around that.

I think most of the new oil free small 5hp compressors you will find at home depot/ lowes etc, in the $300-$500 category are never going to hold up to a tire shop.

This one is 3ph

This guy has a 5hp one with a 3ph motor that's burnt up, only $300, and you'd be just a motor away from a pretty serious looking compressor.

This one doesn't say 1 or 3 phase, but I'm guessing 1phase by the pictures

An air compressor is about the worst application to use a phase converter on because of the starting torque. If you want to run a 3 phase on single phase power, make sure you get a compressor that doesn't load up until the oil pressure builds.

I like that last one, columbiamo, sure looks like a single phase motor. Unless you have 3 phase of course.

1 grand for a used one vs. 2 grand for a new one (more or less), I'd take the new one spec'ed the way you want (1 phase if necessary) for a tire shop where if it breaks down you stand to lose a lot more than a grand worth of work.

Totally agree. I'd rather buy a single phase motor and switches and to convert to 1phase as run a phase converter. And it would cost about the same money. Welders are kind of the same way. I see guys trying to run 3phase welders through a phase converter and the spike loads take it out.

I'm pretty fortunate that I have 3 phase at my shop. Its kind of expensive electric bill wise, but the used commercial stuff (welders, compressors, etc.) is so much cheaper for better stuff, that it kind of evens out.

I bought a used compressor for my shop several years ago, and would do it again, but I don't mind taking chances on used stuff. I'm a big cheapskate like that, and I'm not sure it works out $ wise in the end, but I feel better giving less money for used stuff. I'm saving the environment by recycling.

I built a phase converter and use it in my shop but this is for were i work. Money is not a big deal on this so i may just get the same thing they bought the last time i think it cost around 1200.00. The motor and tank are good so they just want to replace the pump if it was me i would for a money makeing shop i would replace the hole thing. They have 2 shops and got a new one for the new shop after that we could see that the old one was geting worn out. There are 3 compressers at this place it it was up to me we would just have one piped every were and keep anther for back up.
