Can losing weight put you at a higher risk for depression?

I thought that dropping pounds and becoming healthier would make me happier. But why do I feel the opposite? What is the matter with me, what should I do?

Go see a doctor ASAP. Depression is not always something you can control or "snap out of". It could be related to the weight loss or not. It doesn't really matter. Go see the doc.

I never thought of myself as fat.. I'm 6'1 & got up to 230.. I always felt "tough"..
Then I lost 40 lbs & started calling everyone fat.. I got verbally "mean"..
I had to take a look at myself & wonder WHY I did that.. I still don't know WHY but I recognized a problem & curbed my attitude..
Did you take any medication to lose the weight?? THAT will have an effect, is so..

Dieting is pretty grim. Cutting out stuff you enjoy and makes you happy can get you down - I know. If you still feel depressed after you stop dieting it may be something more and maybe a trip to the doctor for a chat would be a good idea.

In answer to your question, YES. A lot of people (with a few extra pounds) use food as their comfort medium. Other people will use alcohol or drugs as their comfort medium. You lose that that comfort and then the depression you had that caused you to eat in the first place comes back. You need to try to find another comfort medium like reading, or painting or going for walks. You'll like the end result.

Since I can just about shade a D8 blade these days I will chime in also. I have gained and lost boat loads of weight I have been as low as 125 and as high as 300 and up and down a couple times. Food is my drug of choice. Truck broke down, a bag of chips will fix that. Missed a bid ... huge lunch will help with the blues. Difficult or dangerous place to work in... a big mac or 2 will immunize me from that and so on. I tried to find a weight that I feel good at and only allow 10 pounds of "drift." I try to avoid the blues as it just compounds my issues. Dieting I concur is a tough row to hoe. The doc will have support and plans to aid you. When dieting my personal electrical system seems to take on some Lucas wiring characteristics and my doc was able to show me how to diet safely and maintain my food levels. Hang in there!

Your body and mind get used to all the processed junk you've been ingesting and they are rebelling. It'll get better. I've lost 30 lbs in the last 60 days with a 40 carb a day max diet. I can once again tie my shoes without getting oxygen deprived. Pretty nice. That said...I had a po'd attitude about pretty much everything over the first few weeks. Salad, salad, salad...geez. My wife suggested a cheat day once a week. I'll have pizza or a big ol' cheeseburger and top it off with an ice cream or candy bar, cheating like the dickens all day. All that food usually makes me feel like crap...then I'm happy again for awhile eating "good" stuff. Dunno...it's been working for me.:confused:

I'm on the health kick at the moment. Got up to 240 and struggled to pull the socks on. I've just about cut out crisps, chocolate, ice cream, beer, etc. My fear was losing muscle so I do about a 20 minute circuit every day, push ups, sit ups, loads of reps with light weights, playing soccer with the boy. Forget the "you must do 45 minutes cardio three times a a week" crap, 5 minutes is better than 0 minutes and while you're pushing yourself, you haven't got time to feel depressed.

I used to get depressed if we ran out of beer on a Sunday .

Then Indiana changed the law and can buy it from noon till 8 pm now on Sunday .:)

One big thing I have noticed as a feller ages he caint eat like he used to back in the day .

20 something old kid can pretty much chow down on anything and burn it off if they are active .

After age 40 that all changes . Even if a feller is still active seems like the body don't burn it off like it used to . Hell ! Nothing works like it used to after 40 :D:p.

So eating habits have to change with the aging process .

You can't be munching down on burgers & fries every day . Once in awhile it's all cool . :)

I cut out soda pop & sweets 15 years ago . Still drink Coffee in the morning , Water all day and Barley soda in the evening .

Some diabetes in the family genetics so waiting for that to show up eventually .

Until then gonna make hay while the sun is shining !
