We just picked this trencher up for free from a company where the corporate top brass said "clear out all the junk" & we thought it was better than junk, so we loaded it on our boom truck & brought it back to the yard. We have no experience with the Davis/Case trenchers, but thought it is worth trying to check out everything on it & try to get it going. Any idea how old it is? The Ser # is 1140513. It looks to be in decent shape & we will not waste any time in finding out!

Does anyone out there have one in working condition that can comment on this model?

It's on the end, on the part that moves in and out. Should be next to the roller, on the side at very end. It goes to a cylinder, much like tensioning mini ex tracks. And like that set up, they can blow seals and not hold tension. Going off memory here, it's been 25 years since I dealt with these. 25+4, 30+4, DH4, DH5 etc.

Well, we tried it out for the first time actually this morning, as we have a trench to do for a new electric service to a building here on the property. It has been about 10 months since it ran & took a bit of coxing to get it going, but once running it worked ok. So far so good.:)

It may be a little hard to tell from the picutures on this post but the old trencher we inherited has a narrow cut, only about 4.5" wide. I am interested in making the cut a bit wider & I wanted to ask if it is feasible to weld tips on the existingt teeth every so often to give a wider trench. I would like to get a little over 6" in width for an upcoming job. Can I tip them to give the extra & if so, about how many teeth would I have to do? Maybe every 6th tooth each side?

There's a company called Ballantine that deals with a lot of aftermarket trencher parts. The "correct" way is to have a spacer in between chain and tooth. They most likely would have these. Downside besides cost is you would most likely need longer bolts, I think every sixth tooth would be fine.

Those outside cutters will take a lot of stress- maybe get some 1" bar stock and just fab your own. I would not use pipe. It's important that bolt goes through one side of chain, into spacer bushing, through other side of chain then into 1" spacer you fabbed, as opposed to just bolting to one side of chain. Some people put both outside cutters on one station, to minimize side load on chain.

The hyd cylinder that raises & lowers the boom is leaking bad & needs to come off. We got the back pin out but the front one nearest the boom is seized in place & no room to get in to get behind the pin to sledge it out. Has anyone else faced this problem & possibly give some advise on what may work to get it apart?

Sent the cylinder out for rebuilding & today put things back together again. A lot of work for one cylinder! Anyhow, up & running!

Hello Metalman 55, Im new to this site but one of the reasons I joined is that I saw this posting of yours. I also have a 40+4 trencher with the same problem of the leaking boom cylinder and I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on how you got your cylinder off? Im disabled but I dont let that stop me from doing things, I just have to adjust sometimes so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!!! I cant find a service manual for this machine which is no help, but I do have the full parts manual and operator manual so if, you dont and, I can help you just let me know. Thanks in advance, Agman55 (Jeff in MO.)

I guess I have to have 3 posts before I can send a private message. Does that mean I have to "start" 3 posts, I havent started any, or does responding to other posts count? So far I only have the posts here.
