I could use a rig like this to drag in dead farm trucks. A good selection of slip in tow hooks and most of the old beaters would be easy to grab on to.
The boom rigging does puzzle me, the geometry is a little odd, I would expect at least a hand cranked multi part line to raise or lower the boom. The attachment points on the boom look like a bent boom waiting to happen to me.
Thats diffrent theres several things they did that makes me wonder how much it was used.

Small block 350 with 4 speed & 5.33 rears .

Boom has an I beam inside it for manual extension .
Hydro under lift hitch in the rear .
20,000 # Garwood winch & 1/2 inch rope .
I know were there is a 69 for $500.00 with a nice bed but its missing its pto.

The 69 sounds like a nice find Old Doug !

We still have the 67 in the fleet .

The boom & rear under lift are actually live hydraulic , not off the PTO .

Tied them in to the power steering pump on the 350 engine. Valve body mounted under the floor on the drivers side so the levers come up rite in front of the seat .

Brazed a fitting on top of the pump to accommodate the suction line off the under hood hydro tank .[/ATTACH]

I looked at the 69 becauce my 67 GMC is about to bad to rebuild. I dont have alot of spare time or i would have bought it and sold the bed and made it into a single wheel one ton. It has a new paint job but hasnt run much in years so it probaly needs every thing.

I knew someone would know what that lever was for. Thanks- I'm always up for learning something.

So how does it release compression? Is it a "rack" inside the head, holding the valves? You guys opened a can of worms, now I want to know....

td25c, I bet that old pickup wrecker comes in handy. Does the power steering pump put out enough pressure with a load on the boom?

That leaver is hooked to a shaft that goes thru the block ,over the camshaft. The intake or exhaust pushrod has a collar on it that matches a cut in the shaft. When the shaft turns it holds the push rod up keeping the valve open.

It sure has been handy , I built it in 1991 .

Power steering pump put's out around 1,000 psi . Most loads with the short boom like hauling a car or pickup on the sling it lifts fine .

Boom extended it will stall out on lifting so we would position the boom first then lift with the winch .

Been on many adventures with that truck :)

I did a very similar setup on a Ford 1 ton in the 80's to run a small dump hoist. As long as they didn't load it too far to the front it worked great.

I worked on a 1 ton that had a 12foot bed with a bigger hoist than it needed runing off the PS pump that worked great it would dump more than should have been hauled on the truck. I like mother earth news back in the 80s but like all good things they changed.
