How hard is it to change out a steering clutch on a CAT D3B? I'm looking at buying this dozer but the right clutch is jerky. Is this an easy fix or do I need a professional to fix? How much would it cost to repair?

Thanks,
Jim

on that model dozer its quite labor intensive. alot has to come apart to get them out. basically whole back half from where you sit backwards. besides alot of lines and linkage not really that bad. big thing remember it has to be up on blocks so you can spin the tracks. on a dozer that old your better off to do both sides. before you say thats the problem. you really should check the steering valves. there is two one left one right. if they out of adjusment. cams bad, bearing cam rides on bad. or something wrong with valve internal can cause the same problem. hope that helps.

Bearings the cams ride on and the cams were bad on mine. Replacement, (which is pretty easy), made all the difference in my!

Where are the bearings and cams? Can they be replaced from top or bottom? I know nothing about this dozer except the 1 hour tour and driving lesson from the seller. Is 20K a good price for this dozer with 4500 hours? It looks good and runs good(no Smoke), only problem is the jerky right clutch. Does the hydraulic tank suppose to be pressurized? Does it take a while to get the hydraulics working? Thanks,
Jim

should be a small removable panel right where the floor comes to the seat riser. it will be a bent piece. you remove it look down inside. if you move the pedals you will see the cams one on each side. they could be removed and replaced just removing the floor plates. Most all hydraulics will pressurize the tank when running do to heat mainly. some actually have a way to release pressure. hydraulics should work min you start the machine.
