Hi everyone, first of all great forum and community, i have been browsing around in here for a while but I think now is the time to seek some assistance from more experienced crowd. Got myself an old case 680g backhoe which has been sitting for a while and needs some work. In some parts it has been stripped to its bare bones but overall it looks functional and hopefully will go again soon. Aside some of the leaking cylinders and missing electricals the biggest challenge at the moment is that it does not take any gears in when running and perhaps someone could provide some guidance of finding the reason. Since I am new in this i have not much idea does it sound something serious or is it only matter of operating the machine, hence brakes, parking brake, clutch cutout and shuttle does not give any response of getting the gear in from neutral to any four it has. None of the indicator gauges are functional either and therefore can not say does it build up enough air pressure for brakes as this happen to be common issue to get them going.

Any help is much appreciated, regards from Australia

Are you referring to the four speed transmission ?
Or the forward/ reverse in the shuttle ?

It is the transmission, shuttle is another trouble as the original lever has been disconnected and apparently someone has tried to hook up the rod instead coming out from the battery compartment to operate, i take this is the shuttle lever as shown on the image, sad story it is i know.

If that rod is connected to the valve on the shuttle then , yes it is the f/n/r rod.
In regards to the four speed, if the shuttle is actually working remove the top cover from the 4 speed and look to see if there is a problem with the shifting forks or whatever the problem is. I recommend putting the transmission in neutral and removing the shift lever before taking the cover off. It just makes it easier to get it on and off for me.
You will find a wealth of information in the Case online parts book here ------> https://partstore.casece.com/us/par...1db0a56639237ecd&sl=EN&currency=#epc::mr52042

Thank you for that Tinkerer, also does the shuttle has to be on neutral to put the gears in or can it be in any position, i am asking this as there is not much control over the valve how it is right now.
Regarding the information i got all three pdf books to look into, parts catalogue, operators manual and repair manual, anyone interested feel free to send me a message.

There is another online parts website which looks more user friendly: https://avspare.com/catalog/case/52042/

Shuttle in neutral to select and engage the 4 speed. Otherwise it'll grind the gears like if you had not pushed down the clutch pedal on a manual trans.

A machine like yours will keep your mind occupied and engaged for the next year or so...lots to figure out!

and it moves, the shuttle valve was in reverse position and as soon as it was shifted to neutral the gears went in without trouble, thanks everyone. Need to fix the control cable from shuttle lever to valve now, all suggestions for the compatible aftermarket parts are most welcome.

Did you ever find the compatible parts for the shuttle lever?

Yes got the compatible parts for the shuttle and for the throttle as well they are all part of the similar push/pull cable family i was not familiar with, there are still few shops around in Australia who can make those.
