Case cx130 problem

2003 case cx130 with cummins. Engine turns over starts momentarily and shuts down. Will take about 15 tries and extended cranking with the starter to get it going. Not sure where to start looking for issues. Changed the fuel filters. Can't see any leaks and when I pulled the fuel filter on the motor it was full so it's not draining back to the tank. Almost like the fuel is draining off the top end/injectors. Is there a backflow preventer in the injector pump?

White smoke when it starts? Low on power? Any fault codes? Does it start easy once it has been running?

Make sure your fuel lift pump is working, it will also have a screen in it, the bottom should twist off of the lift pump. As long as your getting fuel pressure to the injection pump it should start. Should be about 10psi.

Bad speed sensors will cause long crank times, and other funny issues. Try unplugging the crank sensor, then try starting. Plug back in the crank sensor. Then try unplugging the cam sensor, then try starting.

vp44 relay is another common fault, gives low power to the injection pump, and can cause odd issues. Should be below the injection pump, mounted on the frame.

Thanks for the response. I almost feel like I have air in the system but it's weird because I have black smoke (dark smoke) coming out of the pipe while I'm cranking meaning there is fuel at the injectors but it's just not grabbing at start up. I guess these sensors should be self explanatory.

The boost pressure sensor will also cause black smoke, and hard starts. Unplug the sensor, and see if it starts better.

CX 130 has no sensors that would keep it from starting. VP44 and Turbo boost sensor only apply to CX210 and larger. Your unit has the Cummins 3.9 in it. Was wondering if your fuel shut off solenoid is working properly. Perhaps have somebody crank while you watch to make sure shut off is being pulled completely to run position. Other than that, it's basically making sure it's got fuel. 7 to 10 lb. psi at bleed screw on filter

check the banjo bolts on supply line and see if there is a screen in one of them. The fuel shutoff solenoid also sounds like a good posibility. If it's a 3 wire pull type solenoid you should have power to one of the wires with the key on, and power to 2 wires when cranking. One is to pull the solenoid in and the other holds it until the key is turned off. Is there any kind of timer in the solenoid circuit? I don't really have much knowledge of case machinery but a lot of our asphalt rollers with 3.9s have "coil commanders" that the solenoid is plugged into, which have failed and done the same thing you are describing. Looks like a little tube with wires coming out of each side. You could just turn the key on and then Manually pull the solenoid in and see if it stays in or not. If it does and machine still won't start then most likely a fuel supply issue

So I had the dealer come out. Not my first choice but it ended up being the right one. It was the fuel solenoid. Guy had one on the truck swapped it out in about an hour. $300 part $400 travel, labor, and other bs. So it saved me from playing mechanic and now I know one more thing to look for. Thanks for the help guys
