Hi guys, I just want to vent for a bit about my real life experiences with the Volvo MCT125C tracked skidsteer with an enclosed cab. But first I just wanted to say that I have owned and operated a lot of small equipment and normally don't let issues with equipment bother me.
I bought the unit new in 2011 when Volvo partnered with JCB and introduced their new one arm machine with the cab door to the side. I like the idea of the side door because of the contract I had for the machine required me to get in and out of the machine a lot in the run of an hour. with a conventional skidsteer you almost have to pull yourself out of the front of the machine with your arms when exiting compared to stepping out a side door with the Volvo.
So i've had a few issues with the machine over the course of 5 1/2 years and had them resolved without having to spend too many resources so I won't get into great details about them.
up until now I've had normal issues with the unit in the course of the 1400 easy hours that have been put on it. However, last month I got a call from the operator saying that some lights came on the dash and the engine shut down on him. He told me he got out of the machine and noticed some oil under the front of the machine so he started checking the fluids and found no oil on the engine dipstick.
After we got the machine back to the shop we started looking for where the oil was leaking from and narrowed it down to the bottom of the oil pan. We couldn't see because of the lack of space between the oil pan and belly pan of the machine so we figured a rock must have gotten in there and wore a hole through it. It took at least eight hours to pull the engine to which we found lots of dirt but no rocks.
So we couldn't see any holes in the pan and figured we'd add some oil to see where it was leaking from, first thing the oil is dripping through the steel and upon closer inspection we noticed it's leaking from the spot where the slosh plate was spot welded inside the oil pan !!
We put a new oil pan ($500) on the engine and installed it back in the machine and now its knocking real bad lol. I figured maybe $18k cdn for a new engine from the factory but nearly fell on the floor when they quoted me $39000 cdn. So now it looks like a rebuild.
I called the salesman that sold me the machine and explained to him the situation, If ever there was a manufacturers defect this would be it. I explained to him i don't want anything for nothing but would like for Volvo to consider my situation. He explained to me he was headed south for vacation to which I replied " Have a good one "

Anyways thats where I am today ......

They'll probably send a warranty rep to look at it.. I have 1st hand experience with those folks and they are very good at taking care of their products and people.. It might take awhile but they'll usually stand behind it..
They might even pay for the rental bill if you need a replacement machine..?? just ask..
But then again, I just reread the purchase date..?? The kool thing about Volvo is> the squeaky wheel gets the grease.. just "kindly insist" they send someone to look at it.. Good luck and let us know how it turns out..

Turns out I sourced out a company that assembles generators and has the JCB engine as an option. The complete engine is $11k and will have to switch out a few parts. I can live with that

It's not the JCB turbo 4 banger with charged air cooler, is it? Eco something? They were known for engine problems. Particularly catastrophic failure at low hours. I believe there were cases of rotating assembly failure in as low as 400 hours. I didn't hear it was exclusive to the Volvo. I had heard it was a JCB thing and that there was an ongoing case study. I would appeal to your dealer for special consideration. That said, they WILL demand your service history. Every 250 it gets everything but the chaincase changed , iirc.
Good luck
