Hello,

New guy here.

I just bought a 1996 Komatsu PC300LC-5. No manuals came with the machine, and I have some questions about it.

Anybody know the difference between the -5 and the -6 models? I saw a couple -6 manuals for sale on ebay and was wondering if they'd be sufficient or if I should hold out for the -5 manual.

Where's the fuse panel?

Anybody know of an online source where I can download info?

I'm happy to have found this websight. Lots of interesting reading and great pics, too.

Thanks- Joi

Fuses

Cant help you on the suitability of manuals, but I expect the main fuses are in a panel, back of cab behind the seat.

PC300-5 and -6

Joi,

The -5 and -6 are competely different. The hydraulic system pumps, control valves and electrical systems are of different generation. There was also an engine change depending on when and where your -5 was built.

Your dealer should be able to sell you a manual or a CD specific to your machine. If you buy on ebay it will be cheaper but it is risky as freight would be expensive and you may end up with the wrong one.

What is the serial number as this will help identify where it was manufactured.

The main fuse box should be on the RHS, at the front of the console underneath the monitor.

thanks Wulf. The serial # is k20780. This one was built in the UK.

I'm glad I didn't go for the -6 manual. Even though it was only $15. Looks like I'll be going to the dealer.

I was under the assumption that Komatsu refuse to sell instruction manuals and only allowed their Komatsu certified mechanics, such as Linder, to do repairs?

On the Dash 5 Komatsu excavators the service manuals had the PC300 and PC400 machines in one book. The hydraulic systems were of the same design but the two machines had different pumps and main valves.

The wiring schematics usually showed different colors on the wires but the wiring was actually pretty close to the same.

I have a book for those models but I'm not prepared to give it up yet. If you have a question though I can scan pages and email them to you. I also have extensive experience working on those machines and you can ask a question anytime.

Good Luck!

Thanks John C.! Question: I need to replace the seals on the valve cover gaskets for the fuel intake lines. Do I have to remove the manifold to pull the metal fuel lines out of the top?I've tried loosening the fuel lines from the pump, but there is a solid rubber molding connecting all of them. I don't know how to remove the fuel lines off the topp without removing the manifold. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

It sounds like you have the Komatsu S6D125 engine with the six seperate heads and valve covers. As I recall I backed off on the snubbers holding the lines so they would rotate freely and then took the lines loose from the injector and fuel pump. This would let you move the lines out of the way enough to clear the valve covers. As I recall you only had a problem with the first two lines. The rest of the lines would clear the manifold when taken loose at the fuel pump.

There is a big "O" ring on the injector and a rubber gasket at the base of the valve cover. I used to put grease on the "O" ring when I reinstalled the cover. As long as you have the cover off you might as well reset the valves. Clearance is .34 millimeter on the intakes and .66 millimeter for the exhaust. All the valves are set with the engine cold.

The dealer will sell you the manuals you need, I had a 300-3 an I bought them from dealer. I think they were around $250-$300 total, for parts and service. I sold the machine and sold the books on Ebay. Get a good relations with a local mechanic, he will be a great asset. He can offer advise, in hopes of he might get work. I will tell you, that these are great machines, but unless you are familier with this kind of hydraulics, you will need to hire someone to do your troubleshooting. There are alot of after market and used parts for this machine. I really liked my 300, but it was too big to use for our small lot clearing jobs, so we sold it and bought a PC200-5 These are good machines, even with high hours.
