Thanks for the encouragement, tomorrow I get to pull the swing jaw out and probably install new bearings. Not so exciting because this is my jaw so this expense is on me.....TIO

Crack started at edge.
Gas began burning through.
As it got further away from the edge (being cooled by contact with the seat) it began to burn worse and the gully continued to propagate.
I don't know if this theory is correct but it is an idea.
What other problems did it have?

I will check the other valves for sodium leakage tomorrow! :falldownlaugh ...tio

Both birken and 8922659 are likely correct i think. Dunno about the sodium, thought by now it was a thing long past. If the valve had any carbon holding it open then it couldn't cool, so bent slightly, got worse as gas cut it. See this alot on natural gassers. I have a few heads in the shop ready for rebuild, valves looked like this or worse.

That has been my song the last week or so. Lots of snow which then turned to constant rain and there is only so much you can do in a yellow slicker with water pouring in all your tools and electronics....

Just finished all 22 pages and all I can say is Wow! Inspiring to see all that you can do. I liked the strap trick for track assembly.
