Guys any ideas where I can get aftermarket extra wide pads for a D3-4-5 size machine? I recall seeing some 48" pads somewhere? I can change all the pads or just add them on to what I already have.

48" pads would require the the track frames to be moved way out or the extra 24" hanging off the outside of the rails. I know of a small dozer with ~32" pads that are mounted off center. The pads are prone to breakage when encountering anything besides soft mud.

Offset pads were an option for my Dresser TD7G. The expert I talk to at the dealer has a memory like nobody I've ever met. He tells of problems people had with wear in these tractors. It would be my priority to have centered pads. I'm not sure of your application, but unless you will use this in mud at all times, it'll be useless on hard ground.

As others have posted, to go with offset pads is asking for trouble. The offset results in a twisting force applied to the track chain that will take out rollers & idlers in a heartbeat. It will also cause problems with track shoe bolts breakage and possibly problems with rail wear caused by the links not running square on the running gear.

Usually a tractor running extra-wide has the track frames offset. This is a factory-built system with the frames spaced maybe 12" wider than standard and will run track shoes 12" wider than the widest available for the standard undercarriage setup.

Lots of wide pads also run an extra set of rails on the outside of the pads and sometimes the inside as well. I'd guess they use used rails that still have tight pins. If they did a new undercarriage with 3 new rails on each side would be beyond astronomical in cost.

The ones I've seen were half a rail... they started out sawing them in half, nowadays I think you can order the half parts from CAT at least on selected models. Track skidders usually in our neck of the woods, and even an excavator/log loader/harvester or two...

Well pyramid pads would be great. I have to dress and shape 18 miles of levee that we built with an excavator on a barge. My options are find a dozen that will stand up on levee, or bucket dress it all with an amphibious excavator! And let me tell you how boring that will be, much less the cost. I would like to use automatic gps on the dozer.
