I'm in the process of removing my steering cylinder on my 580K, to repack/reseal/rebuild. Its a 1990 phase 3 4X4. I was able to remove the ball joints from the hub, but that's about as far as i can get. I have the giant 5" thick shop manual, that explains the process clearly, but I can't for the life of me loosen the end of the ball joint/tie rod from the end of the steering cylinder. The manual shows a special tool, which is nothing more than a thin crowfoot wrench. The only thin wrenches I own, are the harbor freight specials, which are pretty strong, but are now twisted and in the metal scrap bin lol. Any advice for separating those two components? My only other choice is to take it to the hydraulic shop up the road, but that's going to be expensive. Thanks. John.

If your changing out the ball joint, put some heat on the tie rod end. It will cause the joint to expand and then turn the old one out. Be sure to count the number of turns in order to maintain your proper steering when you put the new balljoint on.

Are you sure it isn't left hand thread? We've changed two sets with no issues. I don't remember the process.

After I read this, I thought that might be it. So, I went out to the barn and broke another wrench. To be honest, I'm not even sure what size wrench it is. 35mm has to be "tapped" onto the flats on the rod, and the same as 1-3/16". 36mm is to big, as is 1-1/4". I don't have a torch, or easy access to one. I'm also uncomfortable with peening, as I've never done it, and am afraid of damaging the rod.

I couldn't get it off. I just kept breaking wrenches. I took the whole machine to my hydraulics repair shop. There are three different steering cylinders, depending on the model you have. My 580K is a phase 3, after serial number 20000. My steering cylinder has 3 socket cap bolts on each side, that holds the gland to the axle housing. Once those are removed, along with the tie rods, you can pull the cylinder out of the axle housing.

I have a 1988 Case 580 K 4wd and am in the process of disassembling the steering cylinder to replace the seals. I have the 3 bolt glands and have the bolts out and tie rods off but my service manual nor anything I could find on the forum tells me how to remove the glands. I have tapped them with a hammer I have pushed the rod in one side then the other, I have used a putty knife and a hammer to try and separate them from the housing. How do you recommend removing the glands?
