Exhaust Pipe Liner?

In the muffler replacement procedure, I have found within the Exhaust Pipe Tube (vertical tailpipe) a liner material akin to rock-wool or fiberglass mat, which was not very difficult to slip out, the tube being frozen in place .. the Hood off the tractor. I do not see a separate part number for this material, so I'm wondering is this is some previous owner's DIY installation? This also begs the question, what is supposed to seal the muffler outlet, to the bottom of the exhaust tube, which is about 2-1/4" larger in diameter than the muffler outlet tube?

Komatsu has done a superlative job in isolating normal engine vibration from the tractor, so obviously there has to be some non-rigid connectivity between the muffler and the hood, so what is supposed to be used to fill this inch wide void around the muffler outlet?

On a side note, I was doing some very heroic muffler patching of little holes, and then reached up and felt that there was ZERO muffler exhaust tube .. just a big hole. I figured just 30 years of corrosion from the open exhaust tube pipe allowing rain to simply run down inside. So with that I got a 2-1/2" Rain Cap to install, but with the open void I'd still have the Smoky Engine Syndrome noticeable briefly during startup, and the new cap would not be getting the benefit of the full exhaust flow.

I invite your comments, experience, and solutions to this rather unusual engine exhaust design, and Happy Holidays .. Safe Journey!

A Google search will give you the full Factory Service manual for $9.95 on Tradebit.

I have tried buying manuals, scanning them, and then offering them for just enough to recoupe my money. I've always sent manual first and then if it helped, please pay $1 or $5(in the case of a $500 manual that was out of print and the company dissolved). No one ever paid.

Pay the $10 USD and get the manual.

I have followed your advice on removing the steering clutch pack from my d20a-6 . It will rotate in the flanges
But will not compress enough to be removed.I can not force it back even enough to clear one side let alone both.
After two days of hammering I am at a loss. Any help I would be thankful .

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Here are a couple things..

take a large wedge and drive the inner drum inside the out drum rotating it in 180 degrees to do it evenly. WATCH it because they will come back in great force. I don't recommend doing the chisel wedge thing because it is dangerous.. I had one chisel fly back and actually went into my overhead door. YIKES>>> After that I cut the drums.. Instead of doing this I would cut the outer drum apart in sections to get everything out so you can get it back to work. No worries I have all of this in stock.. Contact me if you have any other questions or need anything.

I don't think I am quite ready to start cutting up good parts yet , am retired and labor is the cheapest
Thing I have.

:) I understand.. You see sometimes the clutches get stuck in the "wrong" grooves of the drum where the clutch teeth wear into it and its almost impossible to move the steel on steel with the chisel... BUT I can't blame you for trying. :) Take care and good luck

keep in mind they're supposed to come apart. The way Darin explained it is the way I did mine. And a little side note if its that hard to get apart,Then everything inside is probable trash. (Just a thought):)

There are books available for most machines. Buy them. Some are expensive, but worth it. I'd avoid engine oil in hydraulics.

I thought Komatsu 21s used straight 10w oil in the hydraulics? Never herd of the 15w40 before?

Oh man.. First thing i would do is back off the brake band clearance with the adjusting nut in the back of the machine behind the little caps. Also if you stored the unit with the parking brake applied the linkage may be froze and needs lube.. Check the be sure the brake actuator arm is moving in the released position. I've actually drilled and tapped the bearing housing with the arm goes through to keep those little bearings in there free.. You could spray with penetrating fluid but it won't last too long without either taking apart and cleaning unless you drill and tap for grease fitting.. Good luck and keep us posted..

Will check brake linkage and adjustment as you said this weekend I hope that fixes it as far as parking break it wasn't applied but will let you know what I find this weekend

Hi,
Has anyone installed a backhoe attachment to they're D20 or 21? If so, can you post some photos?
Thanks for the info.
