Just like the title says...

I am looking at single axle dump trucks in the 26,000# and under range, prefer a shorter bed to a longer one and would just like to know what the group thinks is a good value, easy to live with model/engine/trans to look at.

Yes, I know...
Get a CDL.

Planning to.

But this is to fit a SIZE need, not a legal one. It's hard as hack to find haulers in the 7-13 ton range and when you're in tight spaces you really need a nice, compact SA.

If you are able to do the work yourself, a off lease box truck makes a decent start. These usually have a 20 + foot box on them that makes a nice storage shed, shortining it up isn't to bad if you have a mag drill to make new holes when you move the axle forward. If you search for a dump bed first you can tailor the truck length to fit it. I have done a few of these and it is a little labor intense but you can build exactly what you want. As far as a brand I like a S series IH with a DT in it, Allison auto likely too. The Top Kicks were ok I suppose but I was never a Cat engine fan and that's all I've ever seen in them, Freightliner eh, what can I say.

Yair . . .

I guess ericscher's size/manoeuvrability issues are the reason the COE, Hinos, Isuzu's, et al are standard in this weight range everywhere in the world but the US.

Cheers.

OK, The gig is up. They will not hold up to the 50,000 lb gross they load them to here when nobody is looking. :D:D:D

Yup- got a new loader driver the other day for some crusher run. Got up to the scales and saw a 33,500 pop up....

I own the Isuzu NPR and can't say enough good about it. It's been a great truck hard worker, very dependable. Mine came with the dump bed, I have seen beefier models with real nice dumps on them.

Well that's definitely worth looking at, and I'm doing so, but I gotta figure that my most likely candidates are something in the Ford F650 size range, or a Chevrolet of comparable size. There also seem to be Internationals in that range as well, but I don't know a lot about them.

I'm trying to find out if there are certain model/year combos that have a reputation for being good workers and not being maintenance nightmares.

I have no idea what you want to spend and what year range you are looking at. But I've always liked the late 80s and early 90s ford 700 and 800s with ford diesels, or if you could find one with a 5.9 that would even be better. We've owned severel of them And they have sure been tough and reliable.
