Looks to me like a bunch of parts/scrap, If you can get them cheap enough you might be able to make a few $$. Your little shop sounds like the perfect place to strip these down all cozy this winter!!

Yep, a little Deere 4045 genset with a radiator mounted load bank would be just the ticket, and as kshansen says, place it where the fan air blows into your shop space, you won't even need an electric heater that way. Probably sell parts off those two monuments enough to pay for the little generator.

Had to take a look at the JD Genset and see this:

Consumption is only 2.4 gph at full load, I'm guessing the 3412 will burn that much or way more at no load. At under $12,000 brand new sounds like a bargain. Now if you could source one a couple years old seems like it would be less money than rebuilding an over sized unit that will need some type of cooling system added to it.

But hey it's your money and time and we will be here with advice which ever way you decide to go. I'd actually vote for something of the same output as the JD but with a 53 or 71 Series Detroit! The noise would keep the grizzly bears away!:D

Looks very close to one I rebuilt a little over a year ago at work!

No Detroits! When I rode the tugs, I slept right over the 6-71 auxiliary... like to find the guy that put the engineer's stateroom over the generator! Only turned 1,200 but still.... damned annoying. Especially when the air system developed a leak.. the ten horse compressor motor cutting in every few minutes and that jimmy thundering as it picked up the load was motivation enough to roll out and go looking for the culprit! Morse controls.... feh.

The 3412 will burn around 50 gallons/hour at full load and I reckon a minimum of around 30gph at low-ish loads.

The 3412 in that photo is only worth scrap price IMO, because of the way it's been stored since it last ran. When was that BTW, the 19th Century..? It'll be a total money pit to renovate and operate purely because of the way the electrical side has been left completely exposed to the elements.

That sounds terrible, I suppose they had your room where it was on purpose so that you would wake up with any change in sound, just in case there was a problem?? Just cruel!! But if you were only using the little deuce genny when working in the shop, the noise would not be a problem, at least in my world!

With the amount of fuel that 3412 burns it makes no sense at all to use it in a remote area unless there is gold involved! 30gph @ 6.50gal that's $195.00 per hr just in fuel!

Better be a good source of gold at that! If the site I checked was accurate today's gold price is around $1,000.00 and ounce, so you better be finding at the least two or three ounces every 8 hour shift just to pay for fuel!

Probably just the way it worked out, the stateroom was closest to the engine room, across from the head, for convenience I think. I also had a mini alarm panel in there to blow me outta my bunk if any of a dozen sensors tripped. In a storm the gearbox level sensors would trip every other wave when we stood on our beam ends... it was an adventure. They say it's like prison, you're trapped in a steel box with a bunch of guys you don't like and in addition there's a chance you can drown!

Gotcha dchevak.

I hope it all works out for you, it takes a big heart and determination to pull on a project such as that.

Please keep us posted and put some pictures up from time to time
