Does anyone know if the trans and diff share the same oil. I bought this machine today and the shifter fork was froze up so I had to drain the trans oil to fix it but the trans doesn't have a fill or check plug but there is a fill on the back of the diff

Thanks

I know on the 118's the transmissions had two systems. The old system has separate oil reservoir. The 118 and 118B had this. The transmission has a hydraulic pump with a separate reservoir using ATF.

This is the old system with separate reservoir:

On the later machines the transmission case itself acts as a sump.

The transfer case has a regular oil filled sump. It uses gear oil.

I would have thought your 503 likely has the newer system, however on my 118B I also could not find a fill plug and then reading the manual I found out you have to fill it through the breather in the picture.
They say on the ones that have a fill on the transmission , there will be a 2" plug so it should be easy to spot.

The transfer case had a plug similar to what's found on pickups etc.Square head. On the side of the pan, left side of the machine.

Yes the diff and trans use the same oil, we use 80-90 or so,they aren't picky. The final drives are separate so check those individually. Do not idle in neutral for long periods as the upper shafts won't oil unless in motion. If newer than a G keep a close eye on the double 60 chains, they are dog breath and will break and lock up the final drives. If you break one stop and fish it out then toss it and put in a new one, do not master link it consider it scrap. Lastly fish plate the blade arms right before the curve where it welds to the circle, it will break where the little stiffener welds between the arm and the circle. I know you only had one ques. but I want to pass on my experience on these machines. I have had these apart to the last bolt and know them well so if you need help fire away.
