Quick question if y'awl don't mind. I noticed a few lone trees left standing out in the middle of the clearcut. Were they left to re-seed, or do they typically grow seedlings in nurseries and replant either manually or mechanically?

Not sure about the odd tree left standing , could be left as a seed tree's . Most areas are replanted manually with nursery raised seedlings.

I think they are left for the birds. I know in the interior they are called "Raptor trees". It is a place where owls,hawks etc can sit and watch for rodents or rest if they are flying around the clear cut looking for a meal. I also believe other birds can stop and have a safe resting place while flying across the clear cut. Cheers L.D.

Bruce W. Timberwest HBO , Hill 60 . The top of "Hill 60" was probably logged by Mayo Lumber in the 1930's by Rail Road , it always amazes me the areas these early Loggers got to with their rail roads . This setting is on top of one of the higher hills or low mountains in this area over looking the Cowichan Valley , on a clear day mountain peaks from Vancouver's North Shore to Mt. Baker and beyond are visible . One of the great benefits of the age of mechanization , was the kind operator who would grab a piece of scrape log and cut it up in 14-16 inch lengths , with the processor . A wheel barrow load in the rigging box on the last load of the day , kept my work shop warm on many a cold Winters Day.

Bruce W. Timberwest HBO , Hill 60 . Don Wilson ( an old BCFP guy who drove the #203 an early HDX Hayes then drove the #6-236 an HDX Hayes brand new )was out from Alberta where he now makes his home . As younger brother Bruce was working on Hill 60 not far from my home , we took a drive up to see him after Supper .
