Case Forklift 584, 580B? Transmission?

I have a Case Forklift that I am working on.
I think that this might be basically a backhoe tractor with a forklift attached at the end with the big tires.
There is a serial number sticker on the tractor part that says 580B CK. Serial #8774186.
There is another serial number sticker on the forklift part that says 584. Serial #5311241.

The local dealer says that having two stickers on one machine is not a normal situation and this must be a backhoe tractor that somebody attached the forklift part to. It all looks factory to me. There doesn’t seem to be any plates or paint areas that look like it has been hacked together. There is faded paint on the side of the tractor part that looks like it might have been 584.

If the temperature is below ~50F, this machine will not move until it has warmed up for 10 to 20 minutes. The dealer mechanic says that it might be the transmission filter needs to be changed. The guy at the parts counter showed me a filter that might be correct but without knowing if the tractor is correct he wasn’t sure. I didn't have serial numbers with me. I don’t know if he was showing me a filter that would go in the forklift or in a tractor. They might be the same. ??

I can’t see where the filter is supposed to go. The dealer mechanic said that he thought there should be a cover on the bottom or the side that should come off to get to where the filter is/goes. I can’t see anything that looks like a filter location. The only things that look like they might come apart are fittings on the top of the housings. Where is the filter?

I don’t know what fluid is supposed to be in the shuttle transmission. Looking at the fluid on the dipstick that unscrews from between my feet, (ATTACHED PICTURE) it looks thick like 90 weight. The parts counter guy tried to look up fluid and thought that it should be 80/140. The mechanic thought it was supposed to be HyTran. What KIND of oil and how much?

You have a 580BFL. The mast is a 584. The dip stick in the floor that you are pointing to is for the transaxle and trans. It holds 17 qts of gear lube. There is a second dip stick, If you look on the side of the machine back from the engine you will find a dipstick that screws down also, it should be just before the 4-speed shifter cover on the torque tube and it holds around 10 1/2 gallons of TCH fluid. I think the trans filter is in the grill at the rad. It has been a long time since I have seen a 580/580B forklift. Those were a 580 tractor with the ring and pinion turned around along with it's rear rims and tires and a forklift operator station/frame installed with counter weights. The 584 on the mast said it was a 4000 pound lift, 585 would have been 5000 and the 586 6000.

This seems to be the dipstick for the transmission.

The fluid level is fine. The fluid looks good.

I did find the filter behind (ahead of) the grill by the radiator.

Has 4 bolts that hold the top on and a big plug in the bottom to drain.

I got a new filter and installed it.
Took the drain plug out to get the little bit more fluid and possible grits out of the bottom of the container.
No real revelations.
No change in response. Still have to warm up for a while before it will move.

I'll probably take a bit of flak for this but that was very typical of those machines , we sold many and it was common for the customers to put the machine up on it's stabilizers and start and go have coffee. The TC was slow to fill for some reason and once operating was good for the day, IMO, i;d just make sure the shuttle valve adjustments are correct, service it to insure clean fresh oil and accept it a normal for that machine. That has been my experience, it no way indicated any type of imminent failure.

That was a common enough machine that others will be able to back me up.

The original oil would have been TCH of that era in the shuttle,HyTran Ultra would be the recent recommendation. The one through the floorboard, 90 wt gear lube. You could destroy the hydraulic shuttle and TC with 90. TC oil level to be checked after allowing oil to be circulated a few minutes then immediately after shutoff.

Melben is telling the truth about them. If you have owned one and it went into F/R hot and cold and after it's been sitting you have a rare one. Most had to be warmed up before they moved. On the backhoes like said put the stab's down and wait till it starts to spin, forklifts all you can do is put the 4 speed in neutral and leave it in forward for a while and let it pick up the prime. Adjustments to spec on controls and clean fluid. You could spend a lot of money and still have the same issue you have now. I would do a pressure check when it's running if you had concerns, but I would not open it up unless it is way off the chart and I mean way off. If your pulling wrenches don't get sucked into it, I have pulled them apart and put them back several times only to have the same effects.

I have a similar 584, S/N 5235109 that acts the same way. It is a 530B CK. I appreciate the information about this as a common characteristic, and will let it pick up the prime.
Thank you sheepfoot and melben!
