Hey guys,I just joined the forum,I am from PEI and in the process of restoring a 1972 Hayes clipper.Does anyone know where I could find the clipper emblems for the bonnet and a bear for the doors. Also I noticed the pics posted they have hayes mud flaps on the trucks,is there someone out there that makes them? There aren't many Hayes trucks here on the east coast I only know of one other one in the maritimes.

Gmackay Welcome to the forum Lots to see Lots to read. You problem is a very common one. .Keep watching E Bay That is your best option for the bears. You might luck out and find some of the missing stuff However your truck was built in 1972 (50th Anniversary of Hayes) so all the bears and signs were gold plated not chrome. If you find the chrome ones you can get them re-plated in gold anyway. You need two door bears Two "Clipper" signs, two Hayes script signs and the big bear for the top of the hood. Then there is the Hayes "H" that also bolts on there right up where the big bear sits. There are "NEW" bears -- solid ones on flea bay but they are missing the base plate that the bears feet bolt to.Just wont fit on your truck!Base needs three holes for the bears feet and underneath it has 4 bolt holes to mount it on your hood Look for an old original bear and get it re-plated. Mud flaps are hard to get I will see if a guy I know beck east still has a set or two he might part with. Even the mudflaps have a date molded into them. There is a guy in New Jersey that has one he is working on Same as yours PM me and I will give you his number. You can phone him and see what he might have doubles of.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've read this whole thread from the very first post; Just want to say that I greatly appreciate the time and effort all you guys have put into photographing, documenting and preserving these west coast legends so that my generation can enjoy them for many years to come. I think it's time to come home from the oilfield in spring and do what every real west coast boy was born to do!

BC-12valve,welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy and are able to post some pictures.

Thank you. I have a few pics of some Hayes HD's from past years taken at the Westwold Steam Show. Also, a few of a Pacific P16 unit LT008 Kwatna Timber truck that has been sitting at Coast Powertrain forever. Hopefully come spring/summer time I will be working with equipment like this and have more chances to take pictures!

A question here if anybody is able to answer it as I am fairly unfamiliar with the world of logging.... Does a guy work his way up from the bottom to get a chance to even drive these off-highway units or can a guy with a "regular" class 1 with bush experience have a shot? I've wanted to drive these beauties since I was 12 years old...the coast is calling my name!

BC-12valve,first of all you need a BC licence. It needs to have #15and #19endorsements.these cover highway and industrial air for off highway. If you are not experienced in off highway trucks, then you need to be broke in. Most companies now use the highway trucks for bush and highway hauls. To break in on a off highway, you would need to ride along with someone until you and the trainer feel you could handle these units. You would start off driving empty then gradually drive a loaded truck with a load of 100-130 tons. You do not get paid for this training. These days not many drivers are broke in as it takes a lot of time with no wage. But it is the best job out there from my point of view.Good luck.

Welcome aboard 12V......The Pacific P-16 that's sitting at Coast Powertrain is kind of unique in that it is a manual transmission truck..It was pouring out when I was there but I am pretty sure it was 12V71 powered..

Driver training sounds like fun.....Cory

Wonderful news! I've got my BC class 1 with both those endorsements and off highway experience since I'm a rig mover. Thanks for all the valuable info! In regards to no wage during training I think thats fine as I'll be making the jump from the oil patch. After spring breakup it looks like I'll be job hunting on the island to turn these dreams into a reality.
Another question...it seems like this type of logging is somewhat seasonal? Seems like spring and summer are go go go and winter is slow slow slow. If that's the case that's perfect for me as rig moving is balls to the wall in winter and dead in spring and summer

Thanks Cory! You are correct, 12v71 green leaker. Also another P16 there from Tercon. Must be an old coal truck from Fred Sowchuck in Fernie.
