Hayes trucks in the logging industry

IMG_1611.jpg You bet HDX. Had to do a little unfreezing before going to get it with the pack mule, but I lowbedded it in just before dark. Plan is to try and see smoke this weekend. Really appreciate the history and insight on the new addition. We will keep in touch.

No Vigilant Most of the Rolls that were in these trucks were replaced long ago with Cummins 220 HP engines That is what is in her now but having said that it is getting hard to find parts for them also!! Good thing is dieselfreak has a rear dump manifold on that engine so it will really sound fantastic when he fires her up. Those engines have the old loud bark that is so sought after today with that manifold on there Take the muffler off and run a straight pipe up the side and there she is. When new these trucks had the exhaust pipe off the turbo and right up through the hood. However when the Cummins was installed they put on the exhaust pipe and muffler up the side of the water tank. When they get around to her she will look better that new. You have all seen their work Top Notch!

Still keeping the 4X3? I would think that with a 220, one would want a 5X4. I would assume that, since we are talking about a 220, it has also been set up at some point with a Jake?

Great stuff on this forum, and I thank you all. I told an old gent at my church who retired from Mack Corporate in Allentown about this place, and particularly about the CL350 thread. His eyes lit up like a Christmas tree.

NO JAKE!!! It came with the old Williams Exhaust brake with the Rolls Royce. Those were the three position air switch with the guage beside the valve I will post a picture of them Good only for up shifting. They were just a air cylinder that operated a baffle in the exhaust pipe and the air valve controlled how much that valve would close. Williams made a modern day one and is still available today only it is called a "BLUE OX" exhaust brake. The US Military also used a similar one on the M123A1C 10 Ton Tractors used as tank transporters/retrievers with the 903 Cummins engines. They were an "After Issue Upgrade" because they were so slow to drop RPM between shifts. I have the truck and I have the two exhaust brake kits from US but never got around to installing them YET

Hank There was a number of them around Hayes got into a deal with the BC Government that involved trade and import etc with the United Kingdom back in 1955 It was not all that good for Hayes They put them in Highway trucks as well as the off highway trucks but customers hated them after a short period of time. They were similar to the Cummins and came with either Turbo or Supercharged versions. I drove them in the HD Hayes's for a while and never minded them at all. I think they had injector line problems (always would crack and spray fuel all over) as well as other issues but for the most part they did OK. There are still a couple in old restored trucks but not very many. Parts were a major reason for turfing them. We even had one in the Sarita Dump Machine and that was installed in 1970.

I'm familiar with the Ox. I believe some of the medium duty Jap trucks still come with their own proprietary version. Doesn't hold a candle to a Jake, but it was a nice option on a T300 Kenworth back in the day.

While I was at it I took pictures of a Williams Water flow control valve bank, These were used mostly on highway trucks when they wanted to add water cooled brakes to their trucks.

My late father used to talk about the log trucks up in the Idaho Panhandle when he was there back in the early Fifties. He said they used some type of hydraulic retarder called.... you guessed it.... a Hydrotarder. He said you could hear one a mile away, and they had a sound all their own.

Although I have never seen one in person, I have heard that some heavy trucks are spec'd with a Brakesaver, Jake, and an Ox.
