This is a great thread. Tomorrow is my first day on a grader. I am a Paving Foreman but it is slow right now and with my understanding of the electronics we use they think I will be able to pick up the GPS and the Cat "M" machine.

Motor Grader's do :

1. Finish or rough grading
2. Segregate material
3. Blend or mix material
4. Scarify material
5. Compact repairs, by wheel rolling
6. Snow and Ice removal
7. Brush cutting , with attachment
8. Road shoulder restoration with sod buster
9. Ditch & Slope building with Slopeboard
10. Also used as taxicab on job, when no radios LOL

Just some things that come to mind. :)

11. Clear scrub
12. Pull stuck vehicles and equipment out of bogs
13. Clean out loader buckets with the end of the blade
14. Trenching and backfilling when laying poly pipe

Rn'R.

Hi, Wolf.

15. fire fighting.
16. pipe laying - actually placing pipes in the trench.
17. placing lintels for storm-water pits.
18. foreman's runabout-limousine.
19. clearing heli-pads in long grass or light scrub.
20. pushloading scrapers - I've loaded Cat 619's with a 21F Cat 12 and Cat 660's with an O&K G350, 42 tons and 400 hp.
21. confuse the beejayzuz out of people who don't understand them.
22. ride herd on scraper operators and truck steering wheel attendants - haul road maintenance and fill-cut control.
23. break out material for elevating scrapers.
24 fix other people's/machine's mistakes.

Any others? Let's hear 'em.

That guy pushing those trees over is lucky he's on a H series. If it was an M series he would have ripped of all the sensor wires and would not be going anywhere. lol pmsl

Not to mention all the hydraulic hoses or /and steering gear up front there.

26. Bulldozer why ? because some of those bulldozer boys can make a bloody mess real quick. ( the best ones are the blokes that drive all over a newly finished topsoiled batter ( yes they do it all the time )). :Banghead :D

This was us a few years ago going back to work after a xmas break on the Adelaide freeway South Australia, We had to stop at this road crossing so the traffic guy could stop the cars etc.

There was a few bob's worth of toys in that lot.

Or he needs a front blade on the grader to push the tree stumps. In Europe the most graders have a front blade to make bulldozing jobs.

Anothe use for a grader is replacing a broken track on a dozer. Had a D9N once that broke a track (this happens when they are run to destruction sometimes and another story) in a mine pit. Used the Cat 16G to remove the old track, drag a replacement out from the used parts storage area and push it under the D9, using the blade. A real handy field service tool and to make things more interesting, was all done on night-shift in a PNG gold mine!

I use a grader for all manner of things at the mine I work at too. I've towed/pulled out all manner of vehicles. Brought heavy tow cables to stuck haul trucks (just hook the eye of the cable with the ripper and go). The other day I transported a cleanup bucket for the 330 with a 16M. Just hooked the blade in it and picked it up.

Interesting description what people do with a grader. When someone find videos or have photos from unusual jobs, I have interest :)

I love it when people can think like that. It's a minor thing to do, but I've had an extreme drought of thinking around.
It makes me happy to hear it.

I read this thread of grader uses and could not resist posting these pics of what a grader can do. This old grader made these girls happy! I know, you don't need to tell me this is not "safe" playground equipment. But it is a golden opportunity to teach safe practices under supervision. :) Maybe they will become grader operators. My granddaughters love Ole Gal.IMG00070.jpgIMG00066.jpgIMG00063.jpg

ole gal; your grand daughters will become much more 'real' and thoughtful people playing around on your grader, than sitting in front of a screen playing games on a phone or computer. There is a whole generation of kids who have lost the plot of 'what being a child was'. I was lucky I grew up in the 60s and 70s, no computers, no ********. You did things, made mistakes, hurt yourself, or your pride, learnt from it, and got on with life !
