I plan on becoming a heavy equipment operator soon, and I was wondering which one would be a better choice, a nccer certified heavy equipment operator school or going through the local union in a four year apprenticeship program?

First thing you are going to have to do is get in some place. I would go for the apprenticeship program. To become an apprentice you don't necessarily have to go union. Many operators start out as a laborer first.
