I am self employed at small business KWAZULU BULK LOGISTICS-roads/civils; transport/plant hire and ADHEEL SANDS-sand mining.
I think our local "operators" are full of it. If owner operators in USA can operate 140G and 14G and still love these machines then I don't see why our chaps complain.
Besides if I were buying for a 3 to 5 year contract I will buy a brand new CAT or BELL. But we work on ad hoc basis we simply can't afford to buy new. Besides if I buy a G it will be a full refurbish. I contract to KZN Transport department and every depot or Cost centre has 2 or 3 graders standing without operators. Some of the latest models too. Volvo, Cat, Bell. The department and municipalities offer like R 80k per annum while private sector is paying up to R 240k per annum for top operators.
its easier to buy a grader than find an operator here.
Nice to know you at Mondi. Been shortlisted 3 times for their road maintenance contracts but was unlucky. Age doesn't matter. I have been told of my late uncle who could drive buses and assemble bus engines at 9 years old. I am 32 and have been involved in my dad's business from a young age. My younger brother has been thought by my dad (late) to operate excavator from 5 years old!

Ps. You won't find me in a chinese machine if it were for free.

Ok cool. Yeah, I think our operators are spoilt in a few regards, and we definitely are short of good operators.
I have no idea how the roads contracts are awarded here, but if I were you I would ensure my machines are in good nick with recently serviced fire extinguishers, and all your operators having up to date certificates, supervisors with first-aid training, and PPE like steel-toe-cap boots, hardhats and high-viz clothing; Mondi is big on safety, which hasn't yet trickled down to their roads department, which when it does, may leave a few in the lurch. Good luck with the comparison between the two machines, and keep us posted! :thumbsup

You wouldn't find me in a Chinese machine if you paid me and it were for free (been there, done that, worst tractor I've driven)
