Topsoil Screener

My friend is looking to purchase a new top soil screener. Initially we will be screening about 1,000 yards, then another 1,000 yards and more after that.

Does anyone have any contacts for such a purchase. We're in Bethel, CT and local would be great.

i dont know what there is for dealers near you but Power Screen makes a very good unit. and CEC makes a very poor unit. this is just my opnion. i have spent around 800-1000 on both brands of equipment and would never buy anything from CEC, its not just the equipment that i dont like they have the wost costumer service i have ever been around.

I have a power screen mark 2, have been very happy with it. I haven't been around many other brands but I have not herd anything bad about a power screen. You might want to just rent a screener if you only have 1000 yards to screen. My machine is far from the biggest and we can screen 200 yards an hour, can be more or less depending on the material - the drier the better. I never worked with a small Thomas screen like you mention, but they don't have a shreder like the power screen does, so you would end up with a lot more waste (clay lumps).

Dont know anything about the screeners, but these are good people. There also not local but right up 91.:beatsme

Hey John
I was at Mass-Conn in Berlin a couple of weeks ago, they had a bunch of screeners there some used. For that amount of topsoil to screen I would just try to rent something. I heard you aren't working for that builder anymore are you doing excavating work now?

Jon, how are you? Nope I left him and am now with Caldwell and Walsh I'm not out in the field anymore, back in the office, working out of Newtown.

The idea with buying is to keep using it. My friend has a job now where he could pay for the screener on this one job alone. Then we could keep moving it from site to site and keep it making money.

I'm doing pretty good, I've been working for a residential builder in Westport running all of his equipment doing site work. I screen all of our own material on site with a Nordberg track mounted screener, it's remote controlled so it's a one man operation to use it.
I went to the Caldwell and Walsh site very impressive.

Take a look at these, they are very portable (1 ton pickup) and will do about 50 to 90 ton an hour. For topsoil I would not consider anything but a Trommel.

We Had a powerscreen 615 trommel, two years ago we replaced it with a McCloskey 516. Its a real nice machine, easier maintenance features, better brushes, a Cat engine and a drum that you can change in about an hour if you want to change screen sizes. A trommel is great for top soil and compost, most have radial stacker built in also which is nice feature. The powerscreen was good, we still have a chieftan 400 and a Mark II for sand and gravel, but u can screen topsoil in semi wet conditions with trommel.

Trommel screens are the way to go. one consideraton on all types is the loading height. Ours is high enough, with the grizzly and hopper that we have to build a 2 foot ramp in order for our 220 volvo to dump into it. Higher if we want to use a smaller loader.

If you don't want to spend a lot. Might I suggest a Easy Screen. It is small but is highly productive. Also the Screen Titian is a nice Machine also. I have used both, both are great but the Easy had a stacker which saves gods of time.

Tried many, liked ProScreen the best

Just thought I'd put my two cents in. I have used several different screeners and I do like the EZ Screen and acutally watched the Powerscreen working also but for cost, shipping price, production and flexibility my money is on ProScreen. Have a friend with one and I have been amazed at what this machine can do. He goes from job to job and screens on construction sites and even small homeowner jobs and he can pick it up and move it around with the 430 skidsteer he has and put it anywhere it has to go. He has the smaller one and I have seen him get as much as 50+ yds/hr and when he is done he just runs it up on his trailer with the skidsteer and off he goes. He is in the process of getting one of the bigger ones too so he can use his loader with the 2 yard bucket. He has enough jobs that it can keep us both busy with the two machines. I think he said the bigger one is less than 20K so thats a good deal. They run nice and easy and he has a couple different size screens that he can change out for different stuff.
