I am finally starting to attempt to fix the brakes on my 580ck i tore it down today and had some small springs falling out of the housing.I see now that they are return springs for the shoes that go threw the housing and attach to the shoes somehow but im not sure where as both springs were broke does anyone know where these hook to on the shoe.I also see there are 2 springs that hold the disc assembly together but these were broke to.I think these 2 go straight threw the assembly.I bought this like this and after a few close calls i am finally fixing it i have new seals, brake linings and discs, and new springs on the way but i sure would like to know im hooking the springs up the right way any pics would be great. I have seen some but the pics are not very clear or detailed as to where they hook. thanks for any help

I have a 1970 or so ck that I did brakes on a few years ago. I think from Case it cost roughly $400.00. The first springs you mentioned I don't remember my machine having them the springs that hold the discs together are a little bit of a challenge to hook them up. The seals are a real challenge to install correctly. The left side of the tractor the seal goes over a splined shaft, then there is a 1/4 inch or so of nothing then the smooth shaft. Getting the seal to make the transition from splined to smooth hard. What I finally did was to wrap .001 brass shim stock around the splines and onto the smooth shaft and use scotch tape to hold it together. Lube up the seal and very carefully slide it in place. I had good luck doing that, the right side I had bad luck and damaged the seal without realizing it. I just replaced the right seal yesterday using the same method as on the left side. Don't know how that turned out until I get it back together. I am wondering if the tire and fender need to come off so you can see better to install the seal??????

You probably already know this but the pieces the brake discs rub against are very expensive.

Yea i got the right side done there should be 2 springs on yours like mine that hold the shoes away from the drum all the ones i researched had them and i think mine is about a 1970 there are 2 for the shoes and 2 for the drums like you said i ended up using a piece of wire to hook all the springs and black tape to put the seal on so far i havent noticed it leaking but i need to get the housing for the left side then i will get it working as well (later this summer) good luck on yours

I was in the middle of putting my breaks back together, so I removed the housings again and now remember the springs towards the front of the housings, they have a metal plug to hold them in the housings. I remember now putting in new springs and plugs to hold them in. When I messed up putting in the new right side seal it did not show any visible signs of leaking. The breaks stopped working and after taking it apart I found every part of the right side brakes covered in gear oil. The left side will drip oil to the ground as soon as you fill the gear case up. Installing the right side I found it very hard to see what you were doing and being in such an awkward position did not help matters either. The left side using the shim stock and being able to see what you were doing really made a difference. Good luck on putting yours back together.
