Questions about engine hours 1845C

I am looking at a 1997 Case 1845C. It seems to be a very tight and smooth operating machine, no slop in the bucket or lift arms, has power to dig no visible leaks. The problem is the hours scare me, 8000! It has the Cummins engine and the valves have been set and serviced every hundred hours. The guy bought it used with about 3000hrs and does all of his own wrenching and has a good reputation. My question, is that to many hours? Thank for your input.

That is a lot of hours. I guess the upside is that its a Cummins and the 3.9 is easy to work on.

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
We have engines pulled at anything from 12-20,000 hours for rebuild and usually reckon that the high-dollar items such as the block (4 lives approx) and crank (2-3 lives) should all certainly be good to go again at the time of the first rebuild. For smaller engines the 12-20k number will reduce but the "rebuildability criteria" of the major parts will still be the same.

Is there any oil analysis history on the engine..?

I had an 1845C with 8500 on the clock and all was well engine wise. One of the tilt cylinders had to be replaced and the hydraulic lift pump went out but it was a strong machine. Controls were a little sloppy but a little work tightened everything up. Running the valves every 100 hours is a joke. I have seen these engines go 4-5000 hrs without a single thing but oil and filter changes and quite a few over the 10,000hr mark but they were getting tired. They are very rebuildable and parts are reasonable. If I were looking at the machine the price would be the issue not the hours. I would make sure I could buy the machine and afford to rebuild the engine and pumps for what a 3-4000hr machine would cost. In other words I would use the hours to get the price down and then run it till it blew not really intending to rebuild the engine or pumps.

I have been looking at skidders on line for a while now and it seems like the hours and prices are all over the place. Every time I find one that the hours and price don't seem bad its clear across the country. What is a decent price? This one seems to be well maintained (not abused) tires are about 50%. They are asking 13k. Seems a little high but its only 30min away.

That is high. The 1845C's hold their value very well, but 13k for a machine with 8K plus hours is too much.

I was thinking of offering 10K max, what do you think. Your close, are you ready for an upgrade? :)
I was looking at a one owner JD 320 <1000 hrs for 21500 but decided that was too much. If I'm gonna spend that kind of money it needs to have a closed in cab with heat. (I'm getting to be a wimp in the cold) Plus I kinda like the hand controls better.

13k around here is ridiculous. I gave $4500 for the one I had. That was 7-8yrs ago but even in pristine condition I wouldnt be giving it much thought if they wanted more than $6,000. 4000hr machines around here go for 8500-10000 and the 10,000 dollar machines are very nice.

in 2012 I purchased a one owner case 70xt with 1100 hours on it. standard flow and no cab. mint condition. I had purchased equipment from the same guy before, he was retiring and had some really nice stuff.

I think you would be fine with that machine, but I wouldn't want to pay much more than $7500 for it with those hours. you can find machines newer than mine, for 12-13k with less than 3000 hours.

but if I were to be buying a skid steer with 8000 hours, case would be my only choice.

and yes hand controls are the way to go.

I will be trading in my 07 465 cab/ac high flow. Nice machine. I am not sure when it will go, may be the end of this season.

I have been looking for a used mini-ex myself, so have been checking out Craigs-list in a 1000 mile circle pretty religiously. This weekend there were 3 1845c's in the Minneapolis area, all with way less hours than the machine you are looking at. The pictures look good and they were asking 10000 in a couple of cases. For that kind of money I think you could get 4000+ hour machine. We fence here with an 1845, 95 model, and it has been the best single piece of machinery I have ever owned.

On a side note, where are you in Montana? It presently looks like we may get an excavator bought in the Seattle area this week. I am going to freight the machine in. If you could find a machine out there in the next few days it could probably ride on my freight deal pretty reasonable. PM me if I can be of any help.

KP7: You need to get your email address to me so that I can pass info along. There is a Case 85xt machine with 800 hrs in Stevensville, mt available today, asking $14500. KSSS is the man to talk to about the XT series, but I do have a 95xt currently. Others will likely give their opinion, but at least from my end if you need a bigger skid steer and are set up to move it around I would be all over that 85xt with those hours if it checks out. Also saw 2004 64HP JD machine in the Seattle area with 1440 Hrs for 15000. I don't know JD machinery, but the numbers didn't blow me out as unreasonable if you are in a hurry to get one bought. I hope you see this and check on that 85XT before it is gone.

That is really a good deal on an 85XT. I had one, my only issue was it being nonturboed. It struggled at higher elevations. I traded it in for 95XT and it was exactly what I needed for what I do.

What do you guys think about a 2002 60XT 1600hrs? Is it the modern version of the 1845C? I am not going to be using the machine commercial, just my own place in the mountains and some snow removal at home in the winter.

They are solid machines, much the same as the 70xt except nonturbo. It has about 2000 ROC which gives it a couple hundred pounds more lift than an 1845C. I may get the hp wrong, but I think it was around 80 hp.

KP, what size machine as far as hp are you looking for? Closed or open cab? There's a 07 420 around me with 750 hours on it for like $17,500...open cab...
