I believe the truck with the 3 bottom dumps were used in the Phosphate mines around Soda Springs, Id. They hauled the ore from the mine site to the processing plant, and there dumped into drive over hoppers. Could be confusing this with a Pacific tractor, I'm not sure.

Vigilant Those are WHD Hayes's built for DRAVO CORP in the Spokane Wash area. Im not sure where they were being used but they were for sure built for them I can dig up some spec's on the trucks if you want. Its the front fenders that give them away as WHD's.

I see it now that you mentioned it. Thanks. It would be interesting to know the specs and what they were hauling. I'm mostly curious to know if they kept the train together to dump, or broke it apart. If they were unloading on the ground and not straddling a hopper or conveyer of some sort, it is conceivable that they could open all the doors at once and dump, provided they had the traction. It's definitely an interesting photo.

There was no mention of the 5th wheel assy so I wonder if they didn't use the same big 5th wheel that the Military used with the big 3 1/2 jaws. This was the oscillating one and would use the big king pin.

HDX, Camptramp, anyone that can get HEF to accept a decent size post without it going into the HEF black hole. This forum is the first thing I check on the internet almost every day. I'm frustrated by the PM and posting business. I'm tired of writing out a longer post and then have it get shredded by the HEF monster. I'm relatively illiterate when it comes to computers and am very frustrated. Do you guys cut and paste or just play the lottery? If its the lottery I just can't win. Pretty soon I am going to find a 2 year to teach me the kids text shorthand so I won't lose such a big investment in time with no benefit in it for everyone that reads this forum or myself. Thanx in advance to anyone that plays the HEF lottery and has the secret to improving my odds. Maybe I'll be able to get to senior member status one day. (For the sake of curiosity does anyone know how many posts it takes to hit that milestone?). I'm not sure what to say other than I log in and go from there , I'm probably the lest litrerate of all on here , I just sorta fumbled my way through it when I couldn't figure out how to post my photo's out of an album I paid a whiz kid to come over to show me how. Now I'm waiting for him to come back and show me how to size pictures from a digial camera . Haven't had any problems with posting as such or PM's . Just a thought are you trying to make your posting's and PM's to long.

Thank you, DBDLS
the above wouldn't post until I wrote something under the thank you as I couldn't see it when I started LOL

From what little info I found, if those trucks went to Soda Springs, Idaho, they were very likely used for mining. That would make perfect sense for this configuration. I suspect the driver unhooked from the whole train and grabbed an empty train to deadhead back for reload. That would allow a yard jockey to break the train down, and pull one trailer at a time over a conveyer to offload. Just a guess though.

Vigilant,
If you watch the video, there were two silo that loaded the three trailers. The first two were loaded at the same time, and I will assume the third trailer was loaded after the train was pulled forward. At the dump site, the train was most likely driven over a hopper, and then each trailer dumped. This makes for fast cycle times. You wouldn't want to slow the process by unhooking the trailers.

Cool! I knew I wasn't dreaming that up! I tried an internet search but found nothing on them so I'm happy to hear that someone else has seen or heard of them. Could you scan the brochure and post the picture?

Thanks, Reg

It would be neat to see a picture of one again. I wasn't very old at the time so I'm not sure how accurately I remember the truck in the brochure.

Hayesno1 --Wrong serial number 6783 Was a conventional highway clipper but was cancelled so never built. The HDX mentioned if it was/is a 1974 would be somewhere around that serial number though.
