I have been shopping and reading up on dump trucks for a while and now it's time to narrow the focus. I heard read a lot about the dt466 being a solid engine as well as not crazy expensive to repair. At the same time I've how at around 200-225HP they aren't a real powerhouse either. Living in the hills and driving a gas truck for a while I am tired of being underpowered. I need to stay with a single axle truck because it always seems i'm in tight quarters. I have come across these and other similar 8100's with a cummins m11 or ism engine. Curious what you guys thoughts are on this combination. it will be used to tow a full sized backhoe. here is an example.

Thanks in advance,

they don'tlist the miles. I'm not going to get this one meant to use it as an example. Haven't heard much on the M11 cummins engine. or 8100 model, mostly hear about the 4700's and 4900's wondering how this would compare.

A bit high seems to be an understatement...... But i guess that's all based on the region you live in.

The lat single axle we had and sold was a little sterling had a hiel bed, automatic, cummins etc. With 90k miles and finally got $12k out of it, was painted and polished like a diamond in a goats a$$. Don't under estimate the sterling they are great trucks and cheap. But not cheap enough that they was awarded all the state bids and all rusted out from toting around salt all it's life

capt_met, seems very high to me also. The M-11 is a very good engine with plenty of power. I have a tandem axle dump truck and the M-11 is excellent, has a 17' bed.

Thanks for the input. I'm not planning to buy the one I had the link to. just used the picture for an example. I agree it is high on the asking price. I have found one closer to home for a much better price. not quite as pretty though. lol

The 8100 is just the old 2300 with a sloped hood. They are a heavy duty truck, where the 47 and 4900 are medium duties. If you are using it in severe service, you will have way less trouble from the heavier truck. The m11 is a lot more engine than the dt466. it is also a heavy duty vs medium duty thing.

Doing the same thing, do you want a truck running at the top of it's capabilities, or loafing along? It depends on price, how much you use it, and what you use it for.

The Sterling is the old Ford heavies, after they were sold to Freightliner. The running parts are fine, but things like plastic dash parts and door handles etc. are made cheap, (but not sold cheap at the freightshaker store).

Got two 8100's. one with an ISM & 10 speed with 4:11. One with L10 or M11 ( can't remember , duhhh ) with an 8 low. I pull my hoe , dozers , bobcats and more. They pull just fine but rough, single axles.
