Hi everyone
I am in Australia, I am a diesel mechanic who used to work for caterpillar, (Westrac Cat) I have been out running my own dozer repair business for a few years now, I am after a full dozer sprocket pulling kit, I have a basic kit I picked up in texas and got freighted over here, it is only a few adapters and the ram, puller legs ect, I have just finished doing the finals and steering clutches in a d8k and I had enough gear to do that job but I would really like to buy a full kit (D2 through to D9H) if anyone knows someone who might be selling this stuff could you please let me know, I will pay for it and organise all the freight from this end, I am only 25 years old and I really like working on these old tractors, it seems to be a dying art so some help would be appreciated.... thanks everone

Pathull, the easy bit is poping the rim off on a K, the more technical bit is pressing the rim up and then pressing the bearings in, you only press off the hub thread to install the sprocket and bearings not off the dead-shaft, on D8H/K's the dead-shaft should always be pulled out of the case to clean out the oil feed labrinth that will be full of sparkles, anyhow to work on D9H rims you need a 150 ton cylinder else you will be a bit low on margin when you come to poke things back together, I do have a mountain of this rim kit with plenty of spare bits from D9 to D2 plus Komatsu D50 to 155, show us a few pictures of your antics might be a start.

Pathull, i don,t have any sprocket pulling gear but have used every bit you would need and at our former dealerships in NSW when i worked there we had the lot, you are right it is a dieing art, unfortunately there is a very good reason for it and that is because the amount of those older machines is just not what it was and the ones still going are hardly ever on frontline jobs ticking up 2000hrs/yr and wearing out and/or destroying themselves. I remember heading out to Emeco one day back in 1993 with the task of popping 3 D9H final drives, 2 on a machine and one on the ground that was removed completely as a unit from the machine.

For the 2 on the machine we split both tracks, rolled em off, undid the diaganol brace on the inside back, undid the outer bearing cap and jacked the machine sky high on the ripper letting it pivot on the equaliser bar, machine had an MS ripper with 2 outside shanks in so nice and stable. This lifts the sprockets high enough to get the 3 legs on then max pressure on the ram, 2 big heating tips and 1 swing of a real hammer and you were in business!!

Now the one on the ground was interesting, same deal with pressure/heat/hammer but boy did it bounce when she let go, i reckon a good 3-4 ft in the air, WooHoo a JHA was just 3 letters in the alphabet back then!!

And finally a funny story, a customer brought a D9H final into our shop a while back and our guys were trying to use the legs and adapters we had which if they had succedded would have seen something let go big time cos it was all the wrong stuff, i walked past and grabbed the supervisor and said pack all that up and send it to Don Clark Tractors, Them and Expressways and maybe 1 or 2 private subbies would be about all the gear that is left in NSW for low sprocket tractors i would think.

Anyway congratulations on having a go yourself and enjoying the older gear, not many 25 year olds today would think you can fix a tractor without ET and a helpdesk to the DSN.

Pathull, I would not say I am an expert at the rim pull lark but I dont know anyone better at it now around me in the U.K. I manage to keep my hand in at it doing around 10 to 15 F/Drives a year, the big benefit is getting the job that no one else can do as they dont have the tooling and /or the knowledge of how to use it, I have mastered the task some as I work by myself and dont have a fancy work truck with all the toys, so its me struggling to to find the easiest way of doing the task, I think I have all the dodges sorted now but its been near 40 years learning, the CAT service books with the tool listing is realy a waste of time, half the tack you dont need I would pull a rim while most Dealer Fitters are scratching their backside, Nige pointed you to a few shots of stuff I get up to with some of the photos worth looking at through a lense to see how I tackle things, on the adapters for Dead-shafts well CAT love the 12 tpi setup with things starting at around 1-3/8", I have about 30 to 40 adapters for CAT stuff with many duplicated some, I am looking forward to your snaps.

Just thought I would add that I to have done F/Drives like Gavin84w scripted, this was working for "Muck Monkeys" who all they wanted to do was get back in the Cut, I have the photo's and the job was a load of Pants saving no time as the case ends up 5 ft off the ground, this style of repair is crap and something I would not let happen now as the time saved is basicaly nothing other than whipping off the blade, this time can be off set against the ball-ache of letting the ripper down and blade messing about to get the Wishbone pinned up, its not going to happen now I know as those days are past but dont think its an easy route as to my mind it wastes time and the gain is nothing and I wish I had stood my ground and done the job the way I work best at, as for pulling rims off the tractor well things do make a good thump, I had a local "Nutter" bring me a D6D case in the back of his Toyota Hi-Lux pick up, to pull off the Sprocket, this was so he only had to pay me a few coins for my time, I told him that we would unload it and do it, anyhow he demanded that I do it on board his Mount??? now I cannot abide the bloke he annoys me a good bit, so I did his bidding and pumped the rim free, the back of his truck looked like a Scud Missile had whacked it one, the dent in the body was imprinted with the hub bearing and Bull gear marks deep enough to have a bath in, I kept a straight face having already drawn the coinage agreed then removed the tooling and watched in amazment as the truck limped out of my gate thinking to myself I wish I had a snap of that, I still cannot stand the bloke and he hates me" I love it"

Here is what I have : I recently bought the complete shop contents from a long time local dirt contractor that went out of business . They serviced their own fleet and also some custom work for others . There is most every thing you would need to do oval track cat machines , D-2 thru D-8 , final drives as well as steering. Also 955/977 and motorgrader . I did not take inventory of every item and i'm sure there is always some fabricated plates/spacers that are needed but this is much more than just cat tooling . There are t-bars w/legs,drive bolts , threaded rod, jaw pullers , bearing splitters ect. Great "starter set " for working on the older stuff with many years of adding to it! A must have, and hard to find this complete . I just came on to HEF to see if any interest and saw your post . I'm asking $6500.00 for everything w/cart ,based on what i,ve seen sell as well as having to buy myself . I don't know much about shipping but would help out on my end as much as possible. So look it over and e-mail with questions. cat tools for sale 001.jpgcat tools for sale 002.jpgcat tools for sale 003.jpgcat tools for sale 004.jpgcat tools for sale 005.jpg

Here is some more pics , I could only do 5 . I talked with my local Cat dealer in used parts dept. He said he would sell for me and that there is big demand for this stuff in South America . I would much rather sell to someone like yourself , hope we can work something out . Also have tooling manual that shows many set ups on the older machines with part numbers for what is needed . cat tools for sale 006.jpgcat tools for sale 007.jpgcat tools for sale 008.jpgcat tools for sale 010.jpgcat tools for sale 011.jpg
