Renfrew Div. #309 Washington Trakloader operator Jim Elliot, Madill grapple yarder operator Ken Kruger #6-221 HDX Hayes log truck . Check out the scissor grapples on loader . When the #309 was new the original operator Alec Malahoff didn;t like the Washington scissor grapples that came with the loader ,so he and welder Lefty Marsh developed these grapples from the originals ,Scan111.jpgScan112.jpgScan113.jpgScan114.jpgJim could eat his lunch with them ,if he could get them in the cab!

Funny how all these old trucks were worth nothing when Timberwaste was dumping them and now they are worth a gazillion dollars Must be a " they become more valuable the older they are" Just like the guys that drove them--They were called Dinosaur's Well now I hear industry call's them "Hard to find" LOL

Excellent pictures Camptramp, they bring back a lot of fond memories of growing up around the forest industry in Lake Cowichan.

Renfrew Div. Honeymoon Bay DLS dirty4fun heres a picture I just found its an off highway load waiting to get dumped . The loaded highway truck with a legal load , is loaded with scaled and sorted wood to be dumped at salt water dump Shoal Island DLS. Does that give you an idea of the size of an off highway logging truck.Scan126.jpg

Renfrew Div. How do you get a trailer reload built at Gordon R. shop down to Honeymoon Bay DLS . You get Master Mechanic Brian Dickson,Scan131.jpgScan132.jpgScan133.jpg Rigger Woods Forman Fred McMurray and Lowbed Driver Tom Worth together and the impossible gets done. Picture shows trailer reload crossing highway under hydro lines into Honeymoon Bay DLS . The back of the reload was held up by a cross log , when it got to the DLS a Chapman loader took the weight of the back end of reload , log was cut off to allow high end of reload to clear hydro lines, the loader carried that end of reload into DLS.

Thanks Camptramp for telling me how much the trucks would haul, and now seeing the difference next to each other. It was hard since the off road trucks are so big and wide that it makes things hard to tell what kind of load they are hauling. Being used to seeing 8' wide loads for the norm then I read where the off road trucks have a 14' bunk, it was hard to figure how much you were hauling. These forestry threads have been my favorite to read and view for quite some time. Thanks for the explanation, and looking forward to seeing and learning more!

Renfrew Div. dirty4fun The bunks on the HDX Hayes trucks #6-221 and #6-222 were 14 ft. wide ,the bunks on the M&M Kenworth bunks are 16 ft. wide , the stakes are 8 ft. high. The Hayes HDX trucks up to 6-229 were a narrower track and lighter springs than the #6-232 and up we had 2 sets of preload trailers the set for the older trucks had 14 ft. bunks the trailers for the newer trucks were 15.5 ft. When BCFP started to widen the preload trailers from 14 ft. to 15.5 , they tried the wide trailers on the older trucks the 6-229 aquired the nick name 2tippty9.

Renfrew Div. Spengstoff your very welcome , the view is terrific from the top of surrounding hill tops , on a clear day you can see the Glacier caps of the Olympic Mountians and freighters and marine traffic in the Straits of Juan de Fuca

camptramp Remember the Caycuse Trucks were restricted to 14 ft wide due to the big NitNat bridge with the gabled side's same as us over at Franklin. BCFP hauled out of the "Spruce Flats" and the other side of NitNat lake. There was a dump out at the mouth of the lake (KNOB POINT) but it was shut down so all the wood was hauled all the way to Caycuse DLS We had the same problem hauling out of the NitNat cross hauling against you guys and going to the Coleman Dump on the Alberni Canal
