I have a 1970 or so 580 CK. I put new brakes in it Maybe 4 years ago. I have been adjusting the brakes to try and make it slow down a little, or maybe even stop. Now the left side will freeze up and I have to take apart the break on that side to get the tractor to move. When the break comes apart it is very easy shows no sign of being stuck. put it back together and the machine moves just fine. The brakes grab a little, both sides maybe a lot. They will also stay locked on until you move the tractor maybe the same direction a little. Then you can move the machine the other direction. Are these brakes telling me something or did I do something wrong?

The round brakes shoes are getting worn and maybe should be replaced fairly soon.

Anyone have this problem or have any Ideas?

The housings are worn & the balls in the actuators are running off their ramps & locking up. Try to get the discs relined with some slightly thicker material ....... or buy new housings........

I wonder if larger diameter ball bearings would work, Mine will lock up now and again but it comes and goes, and you have to drag the brakes for a dozen yards to scuff them up if its been sitting a while.

What are you calling housings? The surface that the round brake pads come in contact with or the pieces that the balls are inside of.
The round brakes could be replaced now, the lining is about a 3/32" from the rivets.

The housings are the covers that bolt over the brake actuator assembly. The parts that the discs run against, it may include the bearing carrier plate for crownwheel if they are worn also ..... thicker discs are a cheaper fix, but they cant be to thick or it won't work either.

Orville, quick question, when you pulled everything off did you clean and grease the dogbones on the band brake? I've found that mine get sticky/chattery over time and its the dogbones not letting the band expand after brake application, rocking a bit will sometimes free it up

Another cause is oil on the lining, even the slightest amount, or a broken spring.

If I would have read your first post again I would have figured out what the housings and actuators were. Every time I have pulled it apart I find a lot of shavings from the brake discs. I think I can take it apart in my sleep now. I will try new discs and ask about thicker ones. The inside housing, the piece with the seal. I was told was $400.00, and that was a few years ago. Is that the bearing carrier plate for crown wheel?

When I did the brakes a few years back I can't believe I would not have lubed that. From what you describe problem and remedy pretty much describe what I have.

I will probably wait till spring to do a brake job, winter is starting to set in and I am just about through using it for the year. When it was put back together at the brake job it was clean, it looked oil free now just dirty and worn. It will be coming all apart this spring, with alrmar's help and fast_st and your help I should be able to make them work properly.
