could someone be kind enough to post a picture of the dash layout of a D4D and explain what all the buttons/switches are. I just aquirred one and some things are missing/broken on the dash, also do all D4D's have a decelerator or was it an option? Thanks in advance.

do you not have three(3) pedals on the floor the right hand one is the decelerator push down and the engine slow down, unless change it over to an accelerator

Hello oldtom, I only have the 2 brake/steer pedals on the floor one for right and one for left, were all d4d dozers equipped with a decelerator pedal or was it an option

Hi
Early ones never had a decelerator pedals.I could not belive why not. Then they had two one for each foot. The dash had battery isolator key , start switch may be light switch, oil pressure, water temp, and battery all good and simple.
Cheers Will

I believe I got a couple of pictures to attach on my machine (also a D4D 78A5667) so feel free to ask about anything you want identified.

Metalman55 thanks soo much, I have the exact same machine serial #83j484 which I believe is a 1968, if you could post the pic of the dash that would be great, mine has a little red button not sure what it is?? also has a piece of oblong metal sticking out with two bolts, again not sure what it is, so maybe you can post your pic and I can ask you what everything is. I can't believe these machines don't have the decelerator pedal I guess it's to early of a machine "I understand they came on later machines" i'll just throttle down before I go from forward or reverse, or is there no need? also how tight should the tracks be? how much play or where do you even measure the track play at?? thanks again for your help

I think too that think the red button is a circuit breaker for electrical items controlled from the dash, lights, possibly preheater etc.. I see my earlier picture problem now....it says my pictures I took for you of the dash, that the files are too big to send, so am out of luck.
My machine is standard trans with a forward reverse shuttle.....no decelerator with those. With power shift trans, would think you would have a decal, but you say there is none? With a power shift a decal is much more important, however in the Cat Loaders, 941's, 951's, 955's & 977's, they were all power shift with out a decal & you didn't idle down to shift them. Maybe the trannies in them had better modulation valves built in the take the shifts at high throttle...not sure. Can you send pictures of the dashboard & operators compartment to see the arrangement & you could get help that way? Metalman

The red button is indeed a circuit breaker of the press to reset type.

As stated by wild8r a decel pedal was offerd as an option on later series of the powershift D4D's and track loaders of the era, it involves some fancy foot swapping due to the brake pedals being set outboard on the D4D, but they were a vast improvement on nothing at all.

Your machine being a powershift, it will have a torque converter temperature gauge in addition to the ones in the pic posted by Metalman, and also probably the fuel pressure gauge, which was mounted at the fuel pump on early builds, but was later dash mounted.

The service manual for a D4E says that it is not necessary to use the decel pedal to prevent damage to the machine, but it is recommended to prevent damage to the operator!

I have an 83J... 4/5 digit serial number... I think :) my dash layout is reversed from the above pic and the t/c temp gauge is second from the left and f/p gauge is 4th from the left... I think, will try to take pics tomorrow.

hello Wheelie, what is the circuit breaker for??

Well you got me on that I guess.. I ran many older cats that had the red circuit breaker and none had lights and many were pony motor start.. .. I have never had one 'pop' but just assumed that it shut down all electric functions....

Here is a pic of mine, no circuit breaker... guess it was removed before I got the machine.

Gauges are L to R : Water temp, Oil press., Converter temp, Amp meter, Fuel press.
the switch above the water temp gauge is for lights.
Also, I replaced the Converter temp gauge about four years ago so it is the new style.
