1830 coil not sparking

I am not getting any fire out of my coil. I took coil off my tractor and put on skid steer and it wouldn't fire either, but it fires on the tractor. What would keep a coil from firing? I had to take the coil off and fix it, so I must not have put a wire back on right or something. I tested the connection going through the coil in the rubber insulator, and it isn't grounded out. Any suggestions? Anyone know what gap should be on points?

I assume you checked for voltage at the coil. The wiring to the points is kind of mickey mouse. Also could be failed condenser. I have the manual at work and will look up the points gap tomorrow if no one else responds. The 1830 seems to have pretty short points life. The manual recommends some ridiculous change interval like 50 or 100 hours.

Got coil firing now, but no spark to the spark plug I have taken out to see if it is firing. If I take the rotor and dist cap off, I can put the rotor in the cap and turn it to the plug wire of the one taken out, and it will fire, but when I put it back together, it won't fire the plug.

So either the rotor is shorting to the distributor shaft (had this happen on a Chevy) or the terminal on top of the rotor is not making contact with center of distributor cap. I don't remember how the cap is made. Is the center terminal spring loaded? Could also be the rotor going down too far on the shaft, is it the right rotor? And I'm out of ideas. Good luck.

The rotor is spring loaded, and holds the cap up a little when I set it on the distributor. When I bought it, the guy drove it up on the trailer and I brought it home. It would run rough and die and not start for a little bit. Then it stopped firing at all. So I took the distributor out and replace the weight springs and fastened the weights back. (they were just laying in the bottom of the distributor when I took it apart. Do the points have to close at the exact time the rotor goes by the contact in the cap for it to fire the plug.
