Lets just step back and scope her out. Just say by some chance the owners decided to keep her original unit number H277 !!!! Yup she is a WHDX and she still does have a Clark style water tank on her AND M&B did get an H277 at Squamish Division with a Clark Auto Trans just like the truck above so maybe just maybe she is old H277 Greatwestcam if the chance comes to check her out again look at the dash and see if there is 3 big holes in it for the Speedo -- Tach-- and Converter Tach all the same size. She came new Aug 7/67 V12 GM 90,000 rears and a Clark auto trans. s/n 7073284. If you get inside look for old highway crossing permits or any old moving permits that will have the s/n on them. My money is on her being H277.

I was looking at the pic's of the other Squamish Division truck posted here last summer by Hayesno1 post #996. There is not much left of her but look at the front bumper-- The steps are cut out just like H277. This was done on most of their trucks.

1974 Hayes HD 35-78 Serial Number 5344

Picked this one up awhile back and we are slowly getting her cleaned up; Runs like a top but needs TLC and misc parts.
I took her for a spin here on the island tonight and took this picture coming off the neighborhood woods road about 7:30pm.
Her working life is over and we will give her a happy retirement; I am considering running this one in our July 4th parade.
She was sitting in the weeds and it took some asking before the owners agreed to sell. Long story, but another Hayes saved!

Trevor Bennett's HD Hayes He bought her off his dad Rich. What a class act that is!!! Rich Bennett originally had a 3408 in it and added the tandem steering. She has been rebuilt a time or two but when you put money back into them upgrading them it sure does show. She has an E9 Mack right now but it is getting timed out and harder to get parts for. Trevor also owns and runs a Yellow HD Hayes Logger on the island here. Also looks uptown

Mr. Grapple that is a fine example of a real work horse. It is not in like new condition, but I personally think it would be perfect in any truck show. I'd love to see her, work trucks deserve respect, she's earned her's. I'd say put her in the show! Thanks for the update on one of your trucks..............got any more? Thanks for preserving history.

She's all original in terms of running gear, and the factory blue paint can be seen in areas around the frame where the paint is peeling or scratched- she wasn't sandblasted when the yellow went on. I really do like the yellow over the blue and I must say the more I drive this truck the more I love it! The drivers door wears all the original tags and along with the Hayes tags there is a Reliance tag so at some point it must have worn a Reliance box. The box on the truck today (has been there a long time) is a 15 yard Truckweld with dual external 4-stage cylinders (with subframe) and rumored to have come off a wrecked Mack DM800 many years ago.

The truck has lots of neat features including a working AM/FM, heated mirrors, working heater/defroster, etc and given it's age and life all that amazes me. While a little rough around the edges, she is really cozy to run.

If you have another Hayes gathering in the future like the big roundup last summer we will try to figure out how to show up with HD #5344.
Thanks for the info and as you may imagine we have a zillion questions for you regarding misc parts, advice, and a real desire to bring her back.

Naturally I have taken so many pics of the truck I get dizzy looking through them but here are a few more quick shots!

Thanks for the kind words you guys and again I absolutely love this truck, even just the way she is today- in her work clothes.

This is the manual that was delivered with your new truck In this case it was H290 from Sproat Lake Division. The price is too high for what it is but if you are really interested then the price does not matter. At least the guy didn't throw it out. Good post Drifter

Rusty Grapple The right hand fender is original but the drivers side has been reworked. Are you able to come up with the headlight box's (Quad Headlite's)that were mounted on them. Being as she was a wide-rad they were on the fenders and not mounted on the side of the rad like the needle-nose HD's Are you going to eventually change the front bumper over to the Push style??? I know too many questions

Yes the fenders are both in 'used' condition and you can see some differences in them; the original fender (RH) is in need of some TLC for sure. The headlights and bumper? would LOVE to add those but am not sure where to look for parts just yet. Any good leads on a bumper and headlight buckets? Also need the 'Hayes' logo to add to the upper rad guard and the wiper motors seem to be stuck- haven't dug into that yet. Its a good project and has GREAT bones but a long ways to go yet. Any and all advice will be welcome and would very very much appreciated HDX!

Good picture. I wonder how much weight it can carry. I wish I could see that personally.
