I have this as beng a kalama built machine for Von Logging of Carleton, Oregon. Delivered December 78. I don't know the Kiwi history other than it was last logging in Lagoon Hills, Wairarapa and is now sitting idle near Masterton. The build tag has it as being a 5-300 but the build records show it as being 5-350. I did look to see if it still has a 8V71T.

Ok, I have a bit more info for this machine. It has been modified by Active Engineering of Rotorua, NZ. They refer to them as an 071E and has had a trackframe conversion, new cab and a Cummins 855 engine swap . For more info see their website. This particular maachine is owned by Hautapu Pine and is currently logging in the Manawatu.

This machine came to NZ new in 1977. The first owner was one Ross Sutton.

First NZ owner, Brown logging, Invercargill and delivered mid 2000. It was a tidy machine on arrival complete with Turbo albeit, the motor as a whole, was in very average condition.

Does anyone have any info on the 4800? How many were made? Where they ended up, anything like that?

This 122 yarder was built for Holbrook /Dyson in 1989 (sry forget what # it was ). It was ordered with a 4 foot cab raiser and a 500 gallon fuel tank for extra counterweight on the back .It's the litte yarder that thought it was big lol , we named it Logzilla ! .In these pictures we are moving to the other side of the bay for a few more blocks . The barge is the Aurora Explorer, it is a west coast working cruise ship . You can book a cruise on the Aurora Explorer and ride on her as she is working going camp to camp ect . The link belt is a 3800 if i remember right , thats a old UH10 for a backspar beside the link belt and a KW fuel truck . I wish I had a video of when the yarder came off the barge , it was let off in about 3 feet of water , as the yarder came off the barge started to raise up , I thought for sure it was going over ,good thing we had it full of fuel .

Yup...this is the same site that Skadill and I visited last year...this time we brought more bushwacking firepower.

And NO....that's not Skadill...it's Fitz...a retired Queen Charlottes logger and machine operator

Truck looks like a good candidate for restoration sans the yarder.

Thanks for an awesome video.

Good work Mike !!
I work on a machine just like that one ( if not that one ). I have a ton of story's about that machine, lot of good time's . The one i worked on also had a cat engine .They put it in after a fire started by a haulback block at the back end ,fire started in the middle of the night sometime , when we got there around 3am the guyline shackles were glowing red we towered down and used cutoff saw to cut the guylines off . Then took the machine to end of the road about 1/2 mile away, were it caught on fire , the fire burnt the yarding motor and yarding cab , Then the bombers did a drop on it . With the new motor that machine would move 1/2 mountain in one turn lol .

For anyone out there keeping track Keith Turner retired Madill service manager turned 106 on May 7. Haven't seen him for a while but was told a few days ago he is still the same as ever. A little hard of hearing but still gets around under his own power and his memory is still sharp. regards d.d.
