the old muffler is rusted out beyond patching and when i took it loose from the cast elbow from the turbo that fell apart also. thinking about sticking a pipe on it. might make it run cooler too. will this hurt the engine? its a 3306. will i be able to stand the noise? huh?

Well that is crazy. I would look for a salvage part, the elbow may be used on multiple machines. The high temperature exhaust will probably burn thru anything less in a short while.

Wouldn't lack of back pressure be hard on valves??

greggn, thats what i was wondering although i cant believe there was much back pressure before the muffler is just a pipe in pipe out of a small barrel anyone else know for sure? also what elbow would fit that would be straight up instead of the angled down one that it has now? one from a dozer that has a 3306 maybe?

If you are keeping the machine, invest in a stainless pipe custom made will last forever.

Its got a turbo, that's all the backpressure it needs. Those cast elbows aftermarket are only a couple hundred bucks. Had to pick one up myself. Or if you have a lathe and a welder, black iron pipe would make up a decent piece. It shouldn't be too loud with a straight pipe, but if your on it all day it may get to you. If it is too loud, you may be able to source a universal type muffler from a heavy truck shop you could make work.

can anyone tell me what other machines used this engine? also i got the exhaust manifold off now and there is some erosion of the metal around #1 and #2 ports on both the head and the manifold. i really dont want to take the head off but i think ill be getting a new manifold. is there some high temp stuff i can put on the head to build it up a little to help seal it around the port? its not that bad maybe a 1/16 or so but more than the gasket will take care of im sure

well just thought id update im getting an elbow from a dozer not sure which one but it will be straight up with a pipe. i can still put a muffler up on top if i think its too loud. this way hopefully the heat will stay out of the motor compartment better. turns out i had the wrong turbo on it. someone somewhere along the line swapped it out from an older smaller hoe. my old one was starting to leak some oil so im getting a right rebuilt one. along with that a new exhaust manifold and gaskets and studs. also new valve cover gasket. it has been leaking oil profusely on one end. when i took it off the old gasket was wrinkled back a bit looks like it was that way since they put it on and its been on along time, maybe since new. be nice not to have a steam of oil running down the block. maybe it will wake it up a bit? its kind of a dog but its a lot of iron to move. im used to farm stuff weighing 15-20,000lbs with 200 hp. this thing weighs 4x that with not much more power. when it works its amazing the amount of dirt i can move and i dont even know what im doing.
