Hello I am new to this forum, as well as new to Dozers. I just bought a 1983 deere 450D. It has the HL-R transmission seems to run and operate well with the exception of the right side final drive. I think there is a problem with the final drive bearing. I have noticed the sprocket is hitting the rear lower roller at times and has chipped some of the teeth. My question is can I remove the final drive without removing the side frame. looks pretty straight forward break track, remove sprocket, remove final assembly. What am I missing thanks for your help and advice.

I did a 450c last year. You should be able to undo track, unbolt sprocket, remove mounting bolts for final drive and lift off with chain fall or engine crane with strap. You do need to remove the square plug that is on side of chasis above final drive and put a bolt and thread into holder to keep position of area of where final drive shaft goes through into machine. I have manual for the "c". Not too bad of a job. Just heavy part. I made the holder bolt, I'll let you know this eve on the dimensions, or any other help you may need. good luck

Thanks for the good info. I MIGHT have got lucky this time I was under the dozer yesterday afternoon with a light and got to where I could see better and now know the rear lower roller is bad. The bearing is out I will try and get the roller off and rebuild or replace it. This will be a much better job. Thanks again for the information.

finals for this machine are notorious for failure. bearings are a problem. jack up rear ,get pressure off of track and pry up on spocket with a bar, I think you will see play in the sprocket, which means bearings. getting to it quick before complete bearing failure ( coming apart ) will save a lot of money. Bull gear is very expensive, pinion gear is pricey and bearings arn't cheap. the only thing cheap on it's replacement was my labor. 450 's are like f-16's , fun to fly , pretty to look at , but a real bear to work on . play for two hours and work on for six .

Wannabe, you took the words right out of my mouth. Have compared them to F16 many times here that way. Run for one, work on it six. They are a real little bi--- to work on too. The first indication of a problem with bearing back there I noticed was oil leaking from between the clutch housing and the final drive. Wear in the bearing there takes out the seal.

you were the one that gave that piece of wisdom!!!! and never a truer word spoken or written. my first indication was the wheel weight rubbing against the rock guard.then the bearings came apart and rollers loose in the final drive case destroyed pinion gear and bruised the bull gear. After I got a few bugs worked out of the system ,it seems to be a good machine, I like it's size and fuel economy.and enough power to do what is designed for, which for right now is a big yellow yard ornament and constant point of irratation with my wife ,It's not a bad thing though, keeps her occupied and gives us something to talk about. good thing I got it back in operation or I would never have heard the end of it.

bdotson, let us know what final outcome is, just curious, my repair was a little more involved than equip guy's .the counterweight under the loader was a problem, well the problem was taking off the drawbar to get to the counterweight to get to the two bolts that hold the final drive case on from the backside , that the manual doesn't show to be there . same idoits that designed this thing also wrote manual .

Got the track and spocket off drained the final oil no metal shavings. Pry bar found no slack in the final bearings. Lower roller was bad letting it walk back and hit the sprocket chipping the teeth off the sprocket. Pulled both tracks found 4 rollers that need replacing. Replacing both sprockets and having bushings turned at the same time should be back to work this week. I feel lucky to get it up and running as cheap as I did!!! Rollers 105 and sprockets 285 pair no shipping(local pickup).
