Hi everyone, Looking at new to me dump trucks and found a real nice truck . Its 2001 pete 330 wth 125000 miles however it has 8100 hours on it. This to me was high hours for the miles. Is it ? Truck showed normal wear and tear for a 125000,pedals,steering wheel, shifter etc. Any imput would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Forums O1DUALLY!:drinkup

What kind of truck is it? Single axle, tandem or tri-axle? What is the history of the truck and who were the previous owners? Has it always been a dump truck or did it have a previous life?

If it was a municipal or utility owned truck, 8100 hours with 125K miles wouldn't be that out of range as it could have had a lot of idle time.

Yeah seems kinda high but as CM said if it was a council owned truck it would have spent a lot of time just sitting there idling to keep the cab nice and cool. Also doing local runs it would not get the miles up versus hours on the clock.
If you do the maths and divide 125k by 8.1k you get an average speed of 15.4 miles an hour, which would indicate a lot of start stop traffic and sitting in traffic idling.
Another possibility is that the truck was used on a job site, where you would have to go slow and 15 miles an hour would be about right if you allow for waiting time to load and unload. Although if it is a single axle truck I would doubt that it was used on site.
There are many other explanations for hours versus miles, might have had a elevated work platform on it, or used as a woodchipper.
However you get the idea that there are numerous applications where a truck does not travel far but is running because the driver is not paying for the fuel and doesn't want to sit in a hot or cold cab.

Thanks CM1995 ! The truck is a s/a and only really know the past three years was used as a dump truck and was told it was always a dump to the best of his knowledge. The guy who has it now got it from the west coast. The dump body is in great shape no dents at all inside a few on the outside. I couldent find the dump body name. The cross braces on the body were spaced 3' apart I was thinking for that amount of spacing maby body was built out of ar400 steel IDK. Wish there was more info on truck.

I know are dumps that run in town a lot normally average about 20 to 25mph. Some of the lowboys if the run in town all day get down to 12 or 15mph avg.

Your welcome.:)

Get the VIN number and go to your local Pete dealer, they can to tell you the original specs of the truck and might be able to tell you who the first purchaser was, although I never dealt with Peterbuilt so I don't know if they can tell you who purchased the truck new.

My dump truck has been on the same job now for 2 weeks . It has not got into high range yet . I am going to fit a hour meter to it so I can track it better and that will be interesting .:my2c

Our propane delivery trucks average about 11 miles to the hour and by 175,000 to 200,000 they seem to be pretty well worn. So I'd say this truck has maybe 50% life left, maybe a little more.

I have driven more than one dump truck with 14,000+ hours on them at 250,000 miles. Seems about right for a dump truck.
