How do you calculate how many axles on a trailer you need to haul? For instance if you have a transformer that is 350,000 lbs how many lines of goldhofer would you need to legally haul over the road?

you will have to look it up in the d.o.t regulation book. i am no expert and i leave out of state equipment hauling to guys to handle this often. no better way to get your iron caught up in a bunch of interstate paperwork by sending it out on the road without doing the proper research.
regards, cd

new york state used to have some insanely lax axle weight laws. I remeber people talking of 150K on 5 (18 wheels) axles with no problem. I think they finally changed this recently though.

Just a brief thing from NY. Says 50K on a tandem and 60K on a Tridem. That would fall in line with their cap of 120K on 5 axle, 20 st, 50 + 50 on the tandems. 130K on 6 axles and 140K on 7 axles
Anything over 160K goes to structures for engineering.
New Jersey, nothing over 800lbs per sq inch of tire.
As a general rule if you figure 20K an axle you can get them to look at what you have and want.

First thing they look at here is tire rating before anything else.

It needs to go to bridge survey in every state. There are states that won't allow a platform trailer with that kind of weight because you don't have the spread. All the axles are in a row. If you are going through several states you most likely will be doing a lot of miles and with that said you will need to go to a dual lane trailer. If it were a fairly short move you could get away with a platform trailer.

Depending on the state as Justin has noted , you'd need anywhere from 16 to 20 lines
