Cat D5G Radio option

I bought a Cat D5G and there is no radio. My D4G had a top of the line sat stereo which was great but all I would really need is a radio. I couldn't find it in the parts book. Does anyone know if that radio would have to be a 24 volt or not? I've been told there is a 12v/24v convertor which can be used. To sit on a cab machine 8-12 hours a day with no radio makes for a long day. Where is a good place to buy an aftermarket radio? Thanks

According to the wiring schematic the supply to the radio connector (that should be already in the machine) is 12V. On the same schematic the radio is quoted as a Cat Part Number 173-6532.

Check your machine but the Parts Book/Wiring Schematics gives me the impression that the FDH-prefix D5G machine is 12-volt. What's the prefix of your machine..?

Nige is right. I bought a sony from Wally world and put it in our d5g. Harness was right behind the cover plate. I found key on power and made sure it was 12v and wired right up. The speakers were already there as well! Hope this helps.

Good point about the speakers. I never thought to mention that before. Best to find the radio connection plug first and make sure whatever radio you buy can be "plug & play" direct into the machine harness. FWIW I wouldn't buy a Cat one, there must be plenty of cheaper options around that will do exactly the same job.

The prefex is RKG and you are right about buying an aftermarket as I don't want to give my first born for a Cat radio. The speakers are there so this should be easy. Thanks

The WGB I have is an XL and I think the RKG is an LGP.:beatsme

So now that I know my little '5 has a 12 volt system, it's time to upgrade the Cat radio for some better tunes, as soon as I get paid for the job we just finished...:rolleyes::cool:

RKG is LGP. I once had a 1995 D3C with no radio and when I took the block out plate off inside it said only a 24 volt radio would work.

Converters are easy to install, 2 wires in, 2 wires out for that 24v machine. They are also used for 2-way radios which are almost exclusively 12v.

There is a 179-6470 housing group (box) located in the cab roof into which the radio mounts. It's listed as part of the enclosed cab arrangement but not part of the open ROPS arrangement. The wiring for the cab roof area is listed as 2 completely different arrangements, one for the Enclosed ROPS (EROPS) and one for the Open ROPS (OROPS). The wiring for the OROPS is much more basic than the EROPS and does not contain the wiring for a radio, wipers, etc. That said, a bit of ingenuity might well sort something for you, but it's not going to be "plug & play".

My radio went out on my D8R which was 24 volt and the dealer had to get me a 12 volt as a replacement as Cat had done away with the 24 volt radios as they would get too hot and wouldn't last. That's what my parts lady told me anyway. I just wired in a $15 12 volt Radio Shack converter and never had a problem with it.

You sound like the one I need to talk to from what I have read. I was wondering if you had any info on the wiring schematic for the starting and fuel system circuit of a D5G SN WGB? Any help would be much appreiciated.
